Who was Alex Pineschi and where did he fight?
Pineschi had initially joined as a volunteer to defend Ukraine after the Russian invasion began in 2022. The contractor – essentially a military operative working for private military companies – was from La Spezia, a former Alpino (mountain infantry) of 42 years old: he had already fought against ISIS in northern Iraq. He died in the Donbass region of Ukraine.
Pineschi had signed a contract with the Ukrainian armed forces; he was likely part of Ukraine’s special intelligence forces under the Ministry of Defense.

An Italian contractor, Alex Pineschi, was killed in Ukraine. The Memorial volunteer association reported the news. Pineschi had arrived as a volunteer fighter in defense of Ukraine after the Russian invasion in 2022. “Our beloved brother died on the battlefield,” the association wrote on social media.
Originally from La Spezia, 42 years old, a former alpine soldier, he had also fought against ISIS in northern Iraq. Pineschi had signed a contract with the Ukrainian armed forces and was reportedly part of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense’s special forces intelligence units.
According to initial reports, yet to be confirmed, as reported by Repubblica, Pineschi was killed in the Liman area on May 23rd. The fighter had been in Ukraine since April 2026: he had signed a contract with the 8th Special Operations Regiment with Kiev. The man’s body, unlike that of other Italian soldiers who have died, has been recovered and will be returned to his family who have meanwhile been notified.
