Looking back to a wet day on Lake Como, and a chance to ride the slow ferry to Lecco. The city is famous for a book I'd never heard of, but every Italian has: The Betrothed by Alessandro Manzoni – a tale of two young lovers entangled in personal and social conflict.
The recent translation by Michael F Moore runs to 704 pages. I should have brought a copy with me – I'd probably have finished it in the time the ferry took to zig-zag its way between the lakeshore towns.
We came to a halt for a few days in Varenna and set off to explore the network of paths behind the town. When you journey on foot, a place reveals its intimate secrets to you – the back lanes and forgotten ways. Despite linking directly to the old town and the busy interchange of the railway station and ferry dock, the paths were quiet. Later in the week, we would walk for a whole day without passing anyone.
Climbing summer continues ...
I visited Sasso Remenno in Val Masino during this summer for the first time. Climbing was excellent and it was not that crowded as expected.
