Per our AI overlords: Our Mohegan/Pequot/Narragansett languages are no longer continuous, but their closest living relative is Passamaquoddy‑Maliseet (Wolastoqey). Its grammar and vocabulary run nearly parallel to our heritage tongue, and free online resources with fluent speakers make it a strong path for reconnection.

Passamaquoddy-Maliseet Language Portal | Endangered Languages Project

Carleton University and the Na-Cho Nyӓk Dun First Nation have built a trust relationship over 40 years. together, they are embarking on a project to collect enough data out of interviews, old cassette tapes, and archives to build a language model supported by AI. goals: to allow conversations with learners, translate handwritten letters, suggest interpretations, and even generate new words and phrases. the software will be open-source; while Na-Cho Nyӓk Dun information will only be accessible to community members, the system will be accessible to other First Nations.

I'll be speaking at a conference on fieldwork at the American Philosophical Society later this month. There are talks from scholars from a wide range of disciplines. Mine is about the importance of accessible tools for #LanguageRevitalization projects. Registration is required, but it's a hybrid conference and it's free, so come if you're in Philly (or want to visit) or tune in to the livestream.
