the fact that there were two different/competing Zimbler klezmer families in NYC both from Przemyśl makes it hard to know which one was playing events like this (a 1911 Fancy and Sensational Ball by the Przemyśler Young Mens and Young Ladies Progressive Association). If another ad has a first name, or even an initial it can definitely make one option more likely, though not proof.

My latest blog post, where I looked at musicians and balls among Britshaner landsmanshaftn in New York.🤔💭

This microfilmed document was one of many I scanned from the #NYPL collection of #landsmanshaft and Jewish mutual aid society anniversary journals. This particular one from 1938 was from the Vladimir-Voliner branch #198 of the International Worker's Order (IWO), a communist-affiliated mutual society network. It would have been for Jewish immigrants from what is today Volodymyr Volynskyy, Ukraine. (The M. Rosenfeld can't be the poet Morris, he died in 1923!)

It's on the opposite coast from me and I've never been, but one year if I'm ever in the area I'd love to go to KlezCummington, a very DIY festival in MA which just ended and whose name constantly leads to lewd jokes. Their theme this year was Landsmanshaft Mutual Aid Society Banquet which is of course close to my research & to my interests.

my first blog post in quite a while, going over the start of my research at YIVO this week and some of the mutual aid society pamphlets where I've been looking for traces of old New York klezmers.

The Start of my Research Fellowship at YIVO in New York – Old Klezmers – Alte Klezmorim

Came across this 1939 banquet #menu while writing up a blog post about the #klezmer Sam Young, who was a member of this #landsmanshaft in New York (mutual aid society made up of #Jewish immigrants from Uście Biskupie, Galicia, today Ustya, #Ukraine, north of Chernivtsi and west of Kamianets-Podilskyi).

Delicious😛 Sam was alive & in his early 60s at the time so I'd like to think he went to the banquet, though I have no evidence.
