Inna Zavorotko (PhD and a lieutenant colonel in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. She currently serves in the Legal Department of the Ministry of Defense) and Oleksii Plotnikov (an officer of the Legal Department of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine) call for a “productive discussion” on de-mining that deserves attention. Ukraine is now one of the most heavily mined countries on earth, and clearing it will take decades, not years.

The global de-mining effort should be more than symbolic — it’s the foundation of any future security architecture in Eastern Europe.

A vital debate, now that Finland has mined its border with Russia and mines are again becoming a real possibility — a nightmare still present in many parts of the world.

Landmines and violence in Colombian Amazon confine Indigenous Siona families

Siona Indigenous guards in southern Colombia are raising alarm that landmines and armed groups are cutting off their families from natural resources and trapping them in small portions of their territory. It’s been an ongoing problem for decades, Mongabay contributor Jose Guarnizo reported. In August 2024, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) expanded its […]

@celeste_42bit Granted, any microwave weaponry I'm aware of either acts to commit #ElectronicWarfare as an active #jammer or as a "#LesserLethal" pain-inducing option to disperse protestors, because a burning sensation on the skin will likely make people flee out of the sight (= theoretical maximum target range) of the source, which is the idea of said weaponry: To act as #AreaDenialWeapon of higher precision and less lingering effects and cost compared to say #TearGas (which is imprecise and requires one's own troops to put on protective gear!) or even #Landmines (which are only effective in a defensive arrangement, necessitating area control at laying - plus they pose a danger to friendlies so they only work in scenarios like the Siege of Sarayevo and the Attack on Khe Sanh where lethal force is not only authorized but we're way beyond "Civil War" at that point.

Land mines and tuberculosis are no match for Tanzanian 'hero rats' sniffing out danger and disease

A man lies unmoving, slumped in the rubble of a simulated earthquake, as an unlikely rescuer approaches: a rat with a backpack. Whiskers waving, the rat breezes past garbage, toppled furniture and scattered clothes to find him and pull a trigger on its pack, alerting searchers above.

Da das Thema Landminen vor einiger Zeit emotional hochkochte, halte ich es für wert, sich auch tatsächlich mit Argumenten auseinanderzusetzen.
