Jerrabomberra Wetlands #landcare day. Because November is turtle breeding month, we just did turtles today. Turtles lay eggs and then they hatch when it rains, but foxes are a problem so we cover nests with chicken wire, then when it rains we try to get to as many nests as possible, dig them up and release the babies directly to water, before foxie gets to them. Today we found one nest already hatched, babies gone, and another nest with 8 live babies:
Up at dawn and away to another Botanic Gardens plant sale, via the farmers' markets for some bulk local olive oil. #landcare
Done all my homework for tomorrow's assault on the Australian National Botanic Gardens' native plant sale. A popular twice yearly event, it's best to get there at dawn, with helpers (if you want LOTS and we do), with equipment (trays and trolleys), with your list, and with very sharp elbows. The ute is packed and the Friends of Mawson Ponds are go !! #landcare #volunteering
As wetlands go, RAMSAR classification is the gold standard. We can only dream, at Jerrabomberra Wetlands. Bravo Tassie! #Landcare

Wetland ecosystem welcomed at Tasmanian sheep farm after 20-year restoration effort

A sheep farmer has welcomed the restoration of an internationally significant wetland on his property outside of Hobart. The collaboration of a non-profit organisation with landowners, scientists, the Aboriginal community and governments has allowed the return of a vital ecosystem.

The wonderful Dr Michael Mulvaney guiding about 40 locals around remnant bushland behind residential Pearce, ACT. We're learning about trees, grasses, birds, insects etc and it's fascinating. #landcare

#Forest#destruction

Trees across #MountMacedon have been knocked down after being clear felled, #devastating the local #Landcare group.

“It is just devastating to walk around this area that was a native forest right near the top of Mount Macedon and see trees smashed on the ground for hundreds of metres,” she said.

“This area was home to #wombats and #birds, #wallabies and #echidnas, and now those animals will be struggling to survive.”

@Alpha1Nine I have contacted the DSE about the building of new housing developments in the Macedon Ranges. I had found growling grass frogs on the lands they wanted and did develop. I thought someone would have responded. Still the housing developments are created and no more growling grass frogs, except on my tiny property. So sad. Also the native grass lands are also destroyed. No one wants to know. #landcare #faunacare #floracare
Back to weekly #landcare and perfect weather for it! Mawson shared path.

Bought a garden cart of the landcare group. Going there I kinda threw it on top of the trailer but it wasn't good and did make the trailer too wide to fit easily through the anti-bicycle barriers along the bike path. So going home I clipped it to the back to the trailer and towed it. #LegalInAustralia

Not shown: the vege shop dumpster dive on the way home so I could get compost. Made the chickens happy :)
