World Minimal Music Festival opent met De Materie van Louis Andriessen

Woensdag 5 april begint de vijfde editie van het tweejaarlijkse World Minimal Music Festival. Vijf dagen lang wordt het Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ gevuld met hypnotiserende ritmes, trance-opwekkende melodieën en bezwerende drones. Naast bekende werken van pioniers als La Monte Young en Terry Riley staan nieuwe composities van Kate Moore en Bryce Dessner. Er zijn ook optredens van de Master Musicians of Jajouka, een fagotensemble van Bram van Sambeek, en van Suzanne Ciani, ‘prima donna van de Buchla-synth’.

Dutch Matters

Elke dag heeft een eigen thema, beginnend met ‘Dutch Matters’. Asko|Schönberg en dirigent Reinbert de Leeuw trappen woensdag het festival af met de vierdelige opera De Materie van Louis Andriessen. Geïnspireerd door de repeterende patronen van Steve Reich schiep Andriessen een eigen versie van het minimalisme. Die is hoekiger en dissonanter dan de muziek van zijn Amerikaanse collega’s. De bezetting haakt met elektrische (bas)gitaar, synthesizers en elektronica aan bij de popmuziek. Als opmaat voor dit concert klinkt een voorpremière van Porcelain van de Australische Kate Moore.

Lavinia Meijer

Donderdag 6 april is onder de titel ‘All American’ gewijd aan de aartsvaders van de minimal music. Harpiste Lavinia Meijer deelt het podium met Ensemble Klang en Nieuw Amsterdams Peil. Zij presenteren iconische composities als Music in Similar Motion van Philip Glass en Violin Phase van Steve Reich. Tevens klinkt muziek van Terry Riley, Thom Johnson en Frederic Rzewski. Diens Coming Together is gebaseerd op een tekst van een bajesklant, die eindeloos herhaald wordt tegen een fond van repeterende motieven in een pulserend ritme.

Bryce Dessner, voorman van de alternatieve popgroep The National componeerde speciaal voor Lavinia Meijer een nieuw stuk, dat tijdens het festival zijn wereldpremière beleeft. Meijer speelt ook haar eigen bewerking van een van de piano etudes van Philip Glass, die zij eerder met veel succes op cd zette. Zij kreeg hiervoor diens persoonlijke toestemming en bouwde een goede band op met Glass, van wie ze ook andere stukken voor haar instrument bewerkte. Inmiddels geldt zij als een autoriteit op het gebeid van zijn muziek.

Fagotensemble

Interessant ook is het concert van de Marokkaanse Master Musicians of Jajouka op vrijdag. Onder de noemer ‘World Roots’ gaan zij een verband aan met de Japanse meesterpercussioniste Midori Takada. Succes verzekerd. Zaterdag is gewijd aan ‘Trance’, met een uitvoering van Rushes van Michael Gordon door fagottist Bram van Sambeek en zeven van zijn studenten. Gordon componeerde het aanvankelijk voor 25 fagotten en als we de festivalbrochure mogen geloven, staat ons ‘een pulserende geluidszee’ te wachten.

Bedwelmende boventonen

Zondag 9 april wordt het festival besloten met het thema ‘Meditation’. The Theatre of Eternal Music Brass Ensemble speelt The Second Dream of the High-Tension Line Stepdown Transformer van La Monte Young. Dit hypnotiserende werk voor acht trompetten bestaat slechts uit vier tonen, die eindeloos lang worden aangehouden – in reine stemming. Die klinkt voor onze aan afgeplatte intervallen gewende oren aanvankelijk ‘vals’, maar het went snel.

Door de resonantie van de instrumenten worden steeds meer boventonen hoorbaar, zodat gaandeweg een bedwelmend klankweefsel ontstaat. Het stuk wordt maar zelden uitgevoerd en beleeft zijn Nederlandse première. Het festival besluit zondagavond met een uitvoering van Kanon Pokajanen van Arvo Pärt. Ook dit monumentale, op Russisch-orthodoxe kerkmuziek gebaseerde werk is niet vaak te horen.

Einde in mineur

Cappella Amsterdam zette Kanon Pokajanen vorig jaar op een alom geroemde cd en tekent ook nu voor de uitvoering. Tragisch detail: het avontuurlijke koor wordt met opheffing bedreigd, waardoor het World Minimal Music Festival ietwat in mineur eindigt.

It's about trying to do the right thing, and if you try to do the right thing with your life and other people agree you're doing the right thing, then that's very satisfying.'"

"La Monte Young is eighty-six years old when I finally track him down for an online interview. After a period of inactivity during the Covid pandemic, he is preparing for a performance at the Dream House. This venue on the top floor of a Church Street townhouse in the TriBeCa area of New York is a permanent sound and light installation, in operation since 1993. It is also the home he shared with his wife, the artist Marian Zazeela, whom he married in 1963 and who passed away in March 2024 at the age of eighty-three.

'In Indian classical music, the musicians like to say "Nada Brahma", which means "Sound is God", he hollers at me on the video call. He is wearing his signature leather waistcoat, sunglasses, a black hood and a white cotton shirt that matches his long white beard and moustache. 'They say it all the time,' he adds. 'It's a mystical experience, you can't pin it down completely but you can go after it, and the more you go after it, the more you get a sense of satisfaction, the more you feel "I am doing the right thing with my life"."

For Young, to understand the power of music and how it affects us psychologically, physically, spiritually and emotionally is his entire life's work. 'What are we after all?' Young asks rhetorically, before giving me his answer:

We're a set of vibrations that we have been exposed to as we grow up in life. Once you start to study sound it never stops, it's a remarkable study. We're dealing with vibrations, and vibrations in sound are audible vibrations, but there are a lot of other vibrations too. Importantly, though, the way you deal with vibration has to do with how you feel comfortable in life."
