La Mélancolique, 1909

Jules Pascin was born in Bulgaria to a Jewish family. He spent much time in Paris where he was known as the "Prince of Montparnasse".

Pascin was a much beloved character but, struggled with depression. He died by suicide at 45 on the eve of a solo show. He slit his wrists + hanged himself in his studio leaving a message written in blood on the wall to his mistress Lucy Krohg.

At his funeral thousands of friends from the art community, + dozens of waiters + bartenders walked behind his coffin for three miles
