  • 16.00 uur - start programma Martin Luther Kingpark

  • 19.00 uur - einde programma

Labour Day march for #eightHourDay by the #labourmovement in Melbourne April 1856: stonemasons and building workers on building sites around Melbourne stopped work and marched from the University of Melbourne to Parliament House achieved an eight-hour day. Their #directaction was a success, among the first organised workers in the world to achieve an eight-hour day, with no loss of pay.

2 Celebrations: Labour Day & IWWD

In an attempt to undermine the collective amnesia of the working class of it's own history first up we hear from Sean Scalmer here at the launch of his book A Fair Day's Work: The Quest to Win Back Time and follow up with voices of working women at the Melbourne International Working Women's Day Rally here this year.

Australian public holidays are weird. This weekend, Tasmania has an extra day off for '8 hours day', a very specific Labour Day celebration. Victoria also celebrates Labour Day this weekend commemorating the establishment of an 8 hour working day. Meanwhile, Queensland celebrates Labour Day at the start of May, like most of the rest of the World, while NSW has Labour Day in October for reasons I don't know.

This weekend Canberra celebrates Canberra Day because politicians would rather talk about themselves than the average person.

South Australia has Adelaide Cup Day this weekend, because workers like nothing better than to lose their money to bookies and other crooks, while seeing whether their horse wins or dies.

WA had Labour Day last week because they are on a completely different time zone while Northern Territory doesn't have a Labour Day because it's too bloody hot to work there.

LABOUR DAY — THE HANDS THAT BUILT OUR TOMORROW

Today we honour those who keep the wheels turning — in rain, in wind, in silence.

From the kerbside to the classrooms, from hospitals to fields — every worker, every hand, every act of labour is a thread in the fabric of this nation.

Dignity in work. Fairness in pay. Safety in every shift.

This is the promise worth rebuilding — together.

Happy Labour day all ( I worked).

"The government’s love for teachers, doctors and nurses and disdain for the unions is slightly head-scratching given the unions are almost entirely made of teachers, doctors, and nurses."

Unions are made of workers

The government’s disdain for unions and love for teachers, doctors and nurses is slightly confusing given unions are made up of teachers, doctors and nurses.

I don't use my #VerticalSmoker often. A couple of highlights were #BBQ #SmokedPork for #LabourDay and this #CanadianThanksgiving Monday, BBQ #SmokedBeef Eye of Round.
For #Halloween, I was considering getting a bonfire going and throw some Fascists on the fire. But that is against the law, no burning rubbish. #ElbowUp

Trump’s treatment of Appalachia’s coal miners exemplifies his approach to labor in general: Kneecap unions whenever possible, prop up industry profits at all costs, and if a few workers die in the process, pretend it never happened.

Trump to Coal Miners: Drop Dead

The administration keeps delaying a life-saving safety rule—while claiming to love coal miners.
