I found the translations for my favorite self-hosted music streaming app a bit lacking.

Zdravím české překladatelstvo!
Od dob, kdy se psala původní příručka pro překladatele, se pár věcí změnilo. Překladatelský tým GNOME má nyní novou a podrobnější příručku. Není kompletní — stále přemýšlím, co přidat — ale doufám, že pomůže dalším zájemcům o překlad začít překládat.

i have a question for speakers of different languages regarding how the software you are using expresses the concept of "an action is currently happening" (examples in english: "Downloading updates..." / "Saving report.doc, please wait...")

so far i see the following options, please correct me or provide with additional ones, or info on languages i have not mentioned

#german / #deutsch: passive voice with phrases such as "wird heruntergeladen" (is being downloaded)

#french / #français: nouns corresponding to verbs, such as "lecture" (reading), "téléchargement" (down-/uploading) and "enregistrement" (saving)

#russian / #русский: likewise verbal nouns, such as "чтение" (reading), "загрузка" (loading/uploading), "сохранение" (saving)

#italian / #italiano: verbal nouns ending in -aggio

#japanese / #日本語: verbs ending in 中

microsoft has localization style guides for dozens of languages, indicating how specifically to best translate english strings into other languages, but it doesn't seem to have any advice on how to translate status strings describing an ongoing action

in english, these are normally written as "Downloading (file)..." or "Defragmenting C: drive..."

looking at their UI string search page:

russian tends to render these using verbal nouns, so "Downloading" would turn into "Скачивание" or "Загрузка"

german seems to use a passive voice with "...wird/werden heruntergeladen" ("...is/are being downloaded"?)

french also uses a verbal noun, in this case "téléchargement"

but there seems to be no actual rule for why they picked each specific form!

as someone who used windows in russian, i know that they used to be very specific with their terminology, and the lack of "hey, how should people translate strings that are saying 'the program is doing this thing right now'?" kinda concerns me
