On March 9, 1917, 2LT Kurt Wolff encountered 2nd Lt Thomas Aloyims Shepard near Annay, France. Wolff, flying his plum-colored Albatros D.III, shot Shepard’s F.E. 8 fuel tank to pieces, sending it down smoking heavily.
