i am posting from my proper-pooter's #kdelinux boot atm [still love my #archlinux boot ofc, but currently captivated by #ProjectBanana]. this is a fascinating internal discussion wrt possible rebasing of the project away from . fwiw i have 🀞🀞🀞 they will not pick ... the irony to me would be extreme given it was only recently i made a personal policy decision to abandon pp's hitherto #kinoite for the present

@britter No, I do not.

Fedora Kinoite and U-Blue Aurora (and Fedora Silverblue ...) are based on container images. So when doing an upgrade or update, actually you are just jumping from one image version to another under the hood.

As they are immutable, most of the system is read-only. Which includes the root partition, so creating the `/nix` directory is not possible.

So my simple solution back in 2023 was to build my own container image that only creates that directory. During the image build this is still possible.

But now this fails, as the base image has too many layers already and docker runs into issues in the GitHub Action.

Hence I need to find another solution. Getting rid of the container image would be good, because why have a container image for just a directory...

#Fedora #Kinoite #ostree #docker

Meh, after the U-Blue Aurora image now my Fedora Kinoite 44 container image with the nix directory hits the "max depth exceeded" error and cannot be built normally. Or does anyone have a trick to solve that error?

"buildx failed with: ERROR: failed to build: failed to solve: failed to register layer: max depth exceeded"

I guess I'll have to look into the nix package now being provided by Fedora and copy their tmpfiles file to create the /nix directory. Which would mean I could get rid of building my own image just for the /nix directory and can start using the official images...

(Not sure I can swap out the existing nix installation while keeping the nix store intact)

@miked ok, but i could not read your mind, only read your written words.

fwiw, imo,
is great, but so are many other distros, it all depends on one's hands-on or hands-off preference. my tower runs two instances of arch kde plasma [different installation modes], one of kdelinux, with thoughts of adding SparkyLinux Testing kde plasma in coming weeks. my lappy now runs said Sparky. on both pooters til recently i ran kinoite, but i recently made a values decision to abandon fedora coz 1. merkan, & 2. they seem to be letting gen-ai in, to both of which things i vehemently morally object. other peeps ofc will make very different choices. good luck.

tower's
/dev/sdc now, since this morning... pic.

last year i initially plonked Kalpa on this SSD, then replaced it with KDELinux, then Kinoite. i recently made a moral decision to remove
from all my pooters, coz merkan [fuck trump!], & also apparently embracing the scourge of gen-ai, ugh.

/dev/sda, tower's original 2015 SSD, still has my 6.5 y/o ArchLinux on it, but for the past six or twelve months the bugger has been exasperating me with a spate of random system freezes that even defeat #REISUB, & so far has also defeated all my troubleshooting efforts. i'm frankly totes over it, & am now seriously considering possibly replacing it.

/dev/sdb is potentially gonna get another [or a replacement?] Arch, &/or SparkyTesting.

sadly though, for some of the now spare partitions across these three SSDs, i've been making numerous attempts over the last several days & nights to install various penguins that keep failing at the final stages of their installations, which is quite ...
disappointing πŸ₯Ί

Truly terrible time Towerly-talking, last 24 hrs

- failed final attempt to install a certain
debian-testing spin that shall nevermore be named, & whose ISOs have now been purged with hatey vengeance, not only failed its billionth installation attempt [all prior attempts with manual-partitioning, into /sda2, but this time using auto-partitioning, into /sdc, ie, i gave it the entire bloody SSD, replacing hitherto #kinoite there], but this time also fscked my beautifully purring lovely new Arch2, which ffs lives on a different fooken SSD jfc [in /sdb4, with its efi bootloader in /sdb3]!

- desperately researching how to fix grub on an encrypted Arch installation, my fav browser went on strike, choosing to begin displaying all tabs as blank pages... in a classic demonstration of the good ol' "
i have an urgent meeting to attend but just need to make these important photocopies for it first" syndrome.

- finally landing on what seemed to be the appropriate procedure & commands, i made my dozenth attempt to fix Arch2's buggered grub, only to eventually be told by
arch-chroot that it can't find a canonical path to /boot/efi, having already told me that my initial attempts to use either of /efi or /boot "don't seem to be EFI thingies". Obvs i still have to revisit & solve this, otherwise... i'll have to nuke this really lovely Arch2, which i had fussed & finessed for a coupla days getting it Just So, & reinstall it, then re-tweak it, despite afaict the root partition itself still being good, & only the preceding EFI partition stuffed up [this is supposition atm]

- icing on cake that sent this correspondent totes over the edge, late last night, whilst engaged in these battles... Tower's
original 6.5 y/o Arch1 [being atm the sole surviving penguin, in /sda4], after pretending for a coupla months to be fixed, fooken FROZE on me again [have been battling this curse for 6mths+, it having run sweetly for the prior 6 yrs].

I stormed off to bed, furious, & utterly determined that once i get at least one of my other penguins playing again, i was then gonna nuke the arse outta this recalcitrant Arch1 wotsit. This morn though, with the sun shining, & some time to reflect, i've decided to take the high road & be all Zen about it, in my local version of
Downunder Dropbear, or How i Learned to Stop Worrying & Love the Ice.

- are any / all / some of the current BSDs [i only know of Free, Open, & Ghost off the top of my head] merkan-based? given the origins of the name itself, i expect it's a stupid question, but thought it best to ask
- would asking for a BSD with
#wayland be a ridiculous hope? [& btw as plasma is a rolling DE, i'm only interested in using current versions, not getting stuck on obsolete versions like Kubuntu users inflict on themselves]
- do any of the BSDs have "LiveISOs" akin to what's commonplace for Linux distros, so i could actually try booting lappy from one & testing all my HW?
- would a mandatory desire to use my paid
#VPN app, which has no BSD pkg https://windscribe.net/download, automatically end this little thought-experiment [ie, my attitude is... no VPN app, no BSD for me] ?

many other questions, but i fear that those four prolly already would make my use-case incompatible

thank you!
