Kensington Palace confirmed the news on Tuesday, putting an end to months of speculation that he might break with convention and attend a co‑educational school or follow his mother’s footsteps to Marlborough College.
In truth, the outcome was never in serious doubt. George is the heir to the throne, and his path was always going to align with royal precedent. The timing of the announcement, coming in the immediate aftermath of Trooping the Colour, also felt calculated – a moment when public attention was already fixed on the Wales family.

“Kensington Palace can confirm that Prince George will attend Eton College from this September,” a spokesperson told PEOPLE on Tuesday, June 16.
The announcement ends a period of speculation as Prince William and Kate Middleton explored a variety of options for where their eldest would attend boarding school.
Much of that intrigue included talk of him going to Princess Kate’s alma mater, the coed Marlborough College, which would have opened up the prospect of his two younger siblings – Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7 – both following him there.
Another report, however, quoted an insider saying, “All roads lead to Eton.”

One cannot help but feel for Prince George. His father, Prince William, who is not known for his intellectual curiosity, went to Eton and has rarely been celebrated for his contributions to public debate. The idea of sending a child away to boarding school when the family has the resources to provide an exceptional education at home seems unnecessarily harsh. If the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had been seen to be managing their child’s educational path in such a public way, the tabloid reaction would have been far more hostile. But for the Waleses, it is simply business as usual.
George will undoubtedly be fine. He will receive an education that few can afford, surrounded by the children of the elite. But the message is unmistakable: the monarchy does not change. Tradition wins. And for Kate, the Princess of Wales, the expectation remains the same: to wave and smile.
