As a 5th-century saint, St. Patrick was roughly contemporary with King Arthur. Some legends say the saint left Britain for Ireland during the reign of Ambrosius, Arthur's uncle. Though there are legends of King Arthur meeting many saints, none survive of him with Patrick.

In the original Welsh legends, King Arthur's two constant companions were Cai and Bedwyr (later called "Kay" and "Bedivere"). Cai was a raging berserker who could grow and become red hot while Bedwyr was a one-handed warrior with a magic spear. The two were said to love each other above all other men.
