I don't suppose anyone on Mastodon has done any #rigging in #houdini using #KineFX and could offer some pointers on how to set up a spine?

Turned the heat back on under the #KineFX motion capture R&D project. Amazingly, despite not having touched it in months, everything still works the way I left it.

When I last left off, the spines were too stiff because the Motiv skeleton only has 2 (3?) spine bones, and our rigs have more.

I managed to splice a splineIK in upstream of the Full Body IK node, so the skeletons have the same joint count in the spines...

...but the CurveSolver node is giving me unpredictable twist. Damn.

This file and accompanying lessons show how we can use Houdini’s KineFX character tools and a TOP network to retarget the Carnegie Mellon University Graphics Lab Motion Capture Database to a rig of our choosing.

I've got my #KineFX workflows figured out at this point. The outstanding question is whether I want to leave them as "templates" or make an HDA out of them. Since it's going to be a fully automated system it's probably a non-issue.
One thing I haven't wrapped my head around with retargeting motion capture with #Houdini #KineFX is how to handle scale differences between the source and target. The Rig Match Pose SOP scales the source and/or target skeleton. My method of removing that scale after the Full Body IK SOP is causing foot sliding...
In between the high level, core architecture refactor and the low level, get-shit-done support I have in store for this year, I want to transition our #mocap pipeline over to #Houdini #KineFX for a couple of reasons. /1
