Watching the actor interview with Shunsuke Ikeda (Ichiro/Kikaider 01) and Daisuke Ban (Jiro/Kikaider) on the Kikaider 01 Blu-Ray and finding out that Mari/Bijinder was extremely popular with audiences at the time is nice... until you realize that Toei management aggressively learned nothing from this on purpose.

Also Hakaider was the most popular character with audiences and for merchandise both at the time and into the 00's (when the interview dates from). That both explains a lot about Gill-Hakaider existing (even if he's just a different guy with the same suit) and is treated by both actors as being highly unusual and basically unique for an antagonist to outshine the protagonist at the time.

Kikaider 01 ends the way it always was: One of the shows of all time.

It is incredibly good that Gill-Hakaider, a pathetic bully who after his early defeats solely picks on people weaker than him (random humans, injured heroes) with craven schemes and sneak attacks (and flees at any real opposition) is eventually taken out by a random human victim of him who's parents he killed stealing his gun and shooting him with it.

That said, I am kinda sad we never got Saburo (the original Hakaider personality from the original show) coming back and fighting Gill-Hakaider for control of the body.

(Also, Hakaider is killed off in the episode where he's going around monopolizing Japan's orange supply in an attempt to get kids to fight over the remaining oranges and become selfish people. I love 70's tokusatsu.  )

Android Kikaider 01: howling with laughter in disbelief that Bijinder's greatest weakness is that if you get to second base with her, she explodes

#AndroidKikaider #AndroidKikaider01 #Kikaider #tokusatsu

Android Kikaider 01 by the late teens episode count-wise has gone completely buck wild with:

  • villains who want to kill everyone for explicitly no reason
  • Hakaider, who has Professor Gill's brain inside him controlling him getting an upgrade from Professor Gill's ghost making him three times stronger!
  • Hakaider hijacking a US bomber with nukes inside to blow up Tokyo.
  • Multiple exploding robot child decoys in an episode.
  • Hakaider hypnotizing a kid by making his brain glow and pulse hypnotically.
  • A sequence where the main villain, Big Shadow reveals his true identity to Hakaider to be Kikaider 01's ally Reiko, then reveals he's actually a cheap floating skull, then is revealed to be a hologram, and then is revealed to be a guy behind a one-way mirror who looks exactly like his original form.
  • After that, a second Hakaider shows up who starts fighting and is then revealed to be Jiro (Kikaider) in disguise wearing a Hakaider cosplay.

seriously, even the characters seem confused by the end of the last one

One incredibly funny bit of Kikaider 01 (toku) is that 01's weakness is if his solar power cell is currently not in sunlight his strength drops to 10%, Kikaider's weakness is Professor Gill's Evil Flute (TM), but the Hakaider Force is incredibly bad at just attacking at night with the flute. They always either use one or the other and are surprised when the other hero shows up and saves them or halfass the darkness angle and leave an escape.

Also 01's solar power works indoors but not in a cave, still trying to figure that one out.

Kikaider 01 Episode 5: oh god the evil flute's back

that thing was in every episode of the original series followed by some really silly way Kikaider covered up the noise to transform

At least Gill!Hakaider wearing Gill's old cape is incredible.

The Hakaider Force (of Black Hakaider, Red Hakaider, Blue Hakaider, and Silver Hakaider, from Hakaider Base) in the Kikaider 01 tokusatu's finishing move, the Hakaider Four-Stage Attack, is... something. It's certainly something.

The thing about the Android Kikaider 01 tokusatsu, is that as an immediate sequel to the original Kikaider they latched onto Hakaider, the rival, being really popular. So they made the initial villains of 01 four Hakaiders. This is both hilarious and a really bad idea in execution because:

  • The classic Hakaider design'd one isn't Saburo (the original Hakaider), but Professor Gill, the villain of the original Kikaider, having put his brain in Hakaider's body. So you don't have any of the style or characterization like the original Hakider. He's just a facist vibes dick, which is just... not Hakaider's vibes at all.
  • he doesn't act like Professor Gill either or have that voice actor, so we're not drawing in kids like that
  • All four Hakaider Force members (operating out of multiple Hakaider Bases that get blown up each episode seriously) fight Kikaider 01 four at a time... and do so badly they come off as incredibly pathetic compared to the original one.

The show has a similar problem in that Ichiro (01)'s backstory is given entirely in twenty seconds of narration and at least in the first few episodes he doesn't have any equivalent of the same about his robotic existence and flawed design the original Kikaider has, and they didn't give him anything else either.

The show is just largely running on vibes of "you wanted more Kikaider" without any depth to it.
