"Cannibal Holocaust", "Hostel", "human Centipede"... horror movies.

And kids books by Richard Scarry (or Richard "Scary"?").

Library books returned December 24, 2023. (Still catching up on weeks I missed since the library was closed due to snow this weekend)

Things:
Haba xylophone/hammering toy -- this had balls you could hammer through the holes and have them roll down the xylophone. Kiddo managed to make a lot of games with this, such as arranging the balls to go through a poster tube, trying different balls to get different sounds, or covering the whole thing and playing "guess the colour" or "find the colour" tapping on the blanket to release the balls. He got an amazing amount of play and creativity out of what I would have considered a baby toy.

Games : Pokémon mystery dungeon rescue team - kiddo enjoyed this for a few days but hasn't requested we buy it. I'm so glad we get to try out so many games this way to see what actually grabs him.

My books:
Glitter - sequel to Golden, which I enjoyed, but this one starts with several chapters of torture, so not my favourite. Dear urban fantasy authors: just because your characters can survive a lot doesn't make me want to read about torture, thanks. After that I got more of the snarky main character and her kitty bff and Norse mythology stuff, but I feel weird recommending this due to all the torture. I'll probably read the next book if the library buys a copy, though.

(Not pictured) Hack Your Bureaucracy - this seemed like an interesting book, but the section I read was all the same kind of lessons I learned in my human computer interaction classes and grad school experiences working in a lab with folk who regularly did human studies: you have to watch your actual users try to use a system if you want to design it well. It got kind of boring. I tried to skip through but it wasn't super easy on the audiobook and the other chapters I tried were similarly "obvious" sounding to me. Maybe worth giving it another shot when I'm in more of a nonfiction mood? But maybe it's too close to my own experiences to be really interesting to me.

Recoding America - nonfiction about tech in government. I flipped through it but like the other book it felt like the ratio of stuff I knew to stuff I wanted to learn wasn't going to be enough to keep me enthused so I sent it back.

Kid books:
Hair - a nonfiction book about different types of hair in animals and what purpose hair serves. Kiddo enjoyed it but it was definitely wordy.

Spirit Rangers - retelling of the first episode of the tv show. Cute but kiddo was disappointed that it was a story he already knew (as often happens with these tie-in books)

Trickiest - nonfiction about interesting animal adaptations. Kiddo enjoyed it as long as we only read a couple of animals per sitting.

Goodnight Like This - kiddo loves guessing which animal would be revealed in the shadows.

Mommy Hugs - kiddo was mad that some other kid had put stickers on this book. Outrage for damaging of library property!

Grandpa Green - kiddo was intrigued that this one had won an award, but I've got to say the award was clearly for adult readers rather than kid ones. He liked it but it didn't seem too award winning to him.

Coats - board book of guessing animals from coat patterns. Simple but kid had fun with it.

Library was closed due to snow yesterday so I'm catching up reviewing on some December books I missed. These are the ones returned Dec 31, 2023.

Things:
The "Sensory Box" has a much of fidget/stim toys, a projector, a tiny weighted blanket, and an inflated balance thing. Kiddo loves the projector and the weighted blanket especially so this was a hit again. There used to be a sleeping bag liner thing in there too but it seems to be gone now.

Kid books:

Catch me - a really fun "find the hidden animal" with the gimmick that when you get to the end you can go back and find the other creature. Great artwork and a huge hit with my kid.

Coppernickle The Invention - an invention goes a bit arwy. Kiddo enjoyed the pictures but was wasn't super engaged with this one.

I am Not a Dog Toy - new teddy bear is determined to be a kid toy but the dog thinks otherwise. Super cute; loved the ending, and we read this a few times.

5 minute Biscuit stories - super cute art but a bit wordy so kiddo wasn't that interested and got up to play while I read it.

Grouchy Ladybug - kiddo didn't even want to read this one but he gave it a shot eventually Not a favourite.

Franklin The Detective - the pages had fallen out and we had to put them back in order. Kiddo liked it partially because of it unintentionally extra interactive. 😅

Clark The Shark Lost and Found - a surprising hit, though not enough to get repeat requests.

Cornbread and Poppy - I don't think I read this one.

How to Bake an Apple Pie - kiddo liked the premise but it wasn't exciting enough to get repeat requests.

Captain Underpants and the (...) Potty People - only dad got to read this one, and also it was the *only* thing dad was allowed to read for a bit, so I guess it was good?

These board books are so adorable ! And they have a pop-up surprise at the end ! Colorful and joyful, they teach babies and toddlers about colors and numbers with the help of friendly animals. The art is beautiful, fun and attractive ! I hope they will do more books in this series !
