Library books returned December 24, 2023. (Still catching up on weeks I missed since the library was closed due to snow this weekend)
Things:
Haba xylophone/hammering toy -- this had balls you could hammer through the holes and have them roll down the xylophone. Kiddo managed to make a lot of games with this, such as arranging the balls to go through a poster tube, trying different balls to get different sounds, or covering the whole thing and playing "guess the colour" or "find the colour" tapping on the blanket to release the balls. He got an amazing amount of play and creativity out of what I would have considered a baby toy.
Games : Pokémon mystery dungeon rescue team - kiddo enjoyed this for a few days but hasn't requested we buy it. I'm so glad we get to try out so many games this way to see what actually grabs him.
My books:
Glitter - sequel to Golden, which I enjoyed, but this one starts with several chapters of torture, so not my favourite. Dear urban fantasy authors: just because your characters can survive a lot doesn't make me want to read about torture, thanks. After that I got more of the snarky main character and her kitty bff and Norse mythology stuff, but I feel weird recommending this due to all the torture. I'll probably read the next book if the library buys a copy, though.
(Not pictured) Hack Your Bureaucracy - this seemed like an interesting book, but the section I read was all the same kind of lessons I learned in my human computer interaction classes and grad school experiences working in a lab with folk who regularly did human studies: you have to watch your actual users try to use a system if you want to design it well. It got kind of boring. I tried to skip through but it wasn't super easy on the audiobook and the other chapters I tried were similarly "obvious" sounding to me. Maybe worth giving it another shot when I'm in more of a nonfiction mood? But maybe it's too close to my own experiences to be really interesting to me.
Recoding America - nonfiction about tech in government. I flipped through it but like the other book it felt like the ratio of stuff I knew to stuff I wanted to learn wasn't going to be enough to keep me enthused so I sent it back.
Kid books:
Hair - a nonfiction book about different types of hair in animals and what purpose hair serves. Kiddo enjoyed it but it was definitely wordy.
Spirit Rangers - retelling of the first episode of the tv show. Cute but kiddo was disappointed that it was a story he already knew (as often happens with these tie-in books)
Trickiest - nonfiction about interesting animal adaptations. Kiddo enjoyed it as long as we only read a couple of animals per sitting.
Goodnight Like This - kiddo loves guessing which animal would be revealed in the shadows.
Mommy Hugs - kiddo was mad that some other kid had put stickers on this book. Outrage for damaging of library property!
Grandpa Green - kiddo was intrigued that this one had won an award, but I've got to say the award was clearly for adult readers rather than kid ones. He liked it but it didn't seem too award winning to him.
Coats - board book of guessing animals from coat patterns. Simple but kid had fun with it.
