✏️ Here's a first! It's my first crack at a custom ball grid array (BGA) package in #KiCad. The particular BGA chip I'm working with (a 256-PBGA with a 1.00 mm pitch) is actually a non-functional test chip designed for validating the soldering process. All balls are internally shorted to exactly 1 neighbor, making it easy to detect open solder joints.

#introduction

Hi, I'm a masc-y enby Dane living near #Geelong. I've called Australia home for almost 12 years.

I have been writing software professionally for ~20 years in a wife variety of programming languages; including but not limited to: C/C++, C#, Python, JavaScript, Rust, Go, Erlang, VBScript.

I've worked in a range of different industries but have had most fun when the outcome was to enrich peoples lives.

Occasionally I'll post about my #beagles on #DogsOfFedi #DogsOfMastodon (see photo attached for dog tax)

I'd like to do more #electronics and #embedded projects both in my free time and at work. So I keep my #kicad, #freecad and #RustEmbedded/ #RustLang skill trees full of points.

#BoardGames are often being played with my wife and friends.
Trying to find #ttrpg buddies for afk play

I don't post much about #baking or #sourdough, but I have a starter that I've kept around for a number of years now. My wife and I make pizzas and burgers weekly. We both love cooking and entertaining guests with elaborate meals.

I used to do a lot of #SCUBA #diving before 2020 came around. I even trained to be an open water instructor.

I dream of a #SolarPunk future and to live in a society where hate doesn't fill every heart with darkness.

Recently picked up #LockPicking as a fiddle activity while waiting for $job things compiling (Building #NixOS on aarch64 takes a long time)

Wish to ditch my phone for an open computing platform and I secretly want to develop an OS too but that does require a lot of spoons that I currently don't possess.

@cccpresser das war richtig gut, vielen Dank! #kicad #anfänger*in #gpn24

From what I read online I understand that KiCad has basic support for multiple boards; I'll only have to add a few connectors to interconnect this sandwich. Let's see how that works out.

Exported the PCB outlines from FreeCAD using the KiCad StepUp workbench. These are the most oddly shaped boards I've ever created. I definately need two, as the electronics are way too much to fit on a single (double-sided) board. The top one will for the display components, the bottom one for the connectors.

The good thing of this stack is that it allows me to glue in the two sensors using some potting compound.

The Fasteners workbench works really great: it allowed me to have all rivnuts, standoffs and bolts placed automatically by selecting the top edge first.

The housing is done for now, will be switching to KiCad for the electronics.
I probably will eventually have to make the housing a little deeper (higher) to accommodate the full stack.

EKOS – An ESP32-S3 ePaper dashboard housed in an oak-aluminum enclosure (Crowdfunding)

Designed by StillFixing in Normandy (France), the EKOS is a local-first, low-power ePaper dashboard built around an ESP32-S3 SoC. It operates without any cloud dependency, subscriptions, or external accounts, offering full privacy, faster response times, and direct local control. The device comes in two variants: the EKOS Pure is a minimalist, non-touch version with two physical buttons for basic control, and the EKOS Sense adds a capacitive touch layer for smart home control, such as toggling devices, triggering scenes, or managing tasks. Both models feature a repair-friendly design with no adhesives, using four screws for assembly and a user-replaceable lithium-polymer battery. Additionally, the dashboard can be updated entirely over your home network without needing the internet. You can push data to the screen using a local API from a phone or PC, link it straight to Home Assistant, or use it to control other ESPHome devices around your house. EKOS

My first KiCad PCB(actually on perfboard)

I finally arranged all components and routed them on perfboard.
Some I put underneath others, cool. Turned out to be more compact than expected.

I hope it is all good, and I will be able to solder it tomorrow.

Btw #KiCad pcb thing is much more comfortable and smart/automatic than schematic. I liked it. Although speicifically perfboard optimized workflow would be convenient.

I designed it as a pcb with 2.54mm grid and many layers, and routing though things, ignoring many rules.
As this wonderful [Arduino forum post suggested](https://forum.arduino.cc/t/perfboard-circuit-design-with-kicad/1283999)

Btw free space to the left is left for debug probe. IDK if to port airfrog to pico 2w(I have it) or other esp32. (esp32-c3 super mini I bought, wifi did not work, even with antenna mod)

Now is eepy time.

Hey #kicad wizards. I need to create a simple foot print for the ESP32 dev kit type board I brought off AliExpress. One of those little boards with rows of pins/holes on two sides.
I should be able to just specify the pin diameter, spacings (between pins, and between the two rows) and the number of pins, and maybe some outline offsets and be done. I don't need it to be pretty, or at least I'd like to jump to that state and then add a couple of labels for pretty.
Guides?
