The 1860s Kibble Palace glasshouse in the Glasgow Botanic Gardens lit by the last bit of this afternoon's sun before the rain clouds blotted it out once again.

There are few better places to visit on a wet winter's day in Glasgow than the Kibble Palace glasshouse in the Botanic Gardens. As well as being a marvel of Victorian engineering, it's got a distinctly tropical feel to it, even when it's cold and rainy outside.

The Kibble Palace, arguably Glasgow's finest example of Victorian iron work. Created by John Kibble, it was originally built at Coulport on the shores of Loch Long before being taken apart, moved to Glasgow and re-built at its current location in The city's Botanic Gardens in the 1870s.

I love the light on this shot, especially the way it highlights the monkey, who's looking straight at the camera, while King Robert looks off into the distance.

King Robert and the Monkey by George Henry Paulin. Housed in the Kibble Palace in Glasgow's Botanic Gardens, it was created in 1927. It's based on a tale from a Longfellow poem about an arrogant king who was dethroned by an angel, stripped of his robes, and forced to assume the role of a jester with only a monkey for a friend.
