I think partly is because there's no #KeywordSearch (at least for local instances) in Mastodon yet, while most people coming from other social media platforms were used to not having hashtags for discoverability.

The mastodon search field has its limitations for finding #groups, cause you have to know or to guess the first letters of a group. If you enter another part of the name you cannot find a matching #group. A list with all groups or a #keywordSearch would offer the ability to find groups via any part of its name. At least groups exist to find or to publish posts of a special topic. Therefore you must be easily able 1) to find them and 2) to see the posts. Otherwise groups would rarely make sense.
