Mitochondria in the heart, skeletal muscle, kidney, and liver of individuals with Type 2 diabetes or with fatty liver disease have a diminished ability to produce energy from ketone bodies.

The liver plays a central role in storing and supplying energy to the body. In type 2 diabetes and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD, commonly referred to as fatty liver disease), mitochondria—the cell's power plants—cannot switch efficiently between fuel sources.
A rat study found that ketones produced by the liver during exercise supported memory and mitochondrial function in the brain. When liver ketone production was suppressed, cognitive function declined. This decline was not seen, however, in rats previously trained with endurance exercise.

A new study shows that ketone production in the liver is essential for maintaining brain health during exercise. When liver ketone production is blocked, cognitive function suffers — but endurance exercise can reverse these deficits and restore mitochondrial performance.
"Unlike #glucose, #ketones effectively stabilized deteriorating brain networks, but with effects that differed significantly across critical transition points. Ketones showed moderate benefits in young adults (20-39 years), showed maximum benefits during the midlife “metabolic stress” period (40-59 years) after which networks begin destabilizing, but had diminished impact in older adults (60-79 years) once the network destabilization hit maximum acceleration and the domination of compounding vascular effects.
Mujica-Parodi and co-authors say that these findings could revolutionize approaches to preventing age-related cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases like #Alzheimer’s."
Groundbreaking research reveals metabolic interventions could help prevent cognitive aging STONY BROOK, NY, March 5, 2025 – A landmark study published in PNAS has unveiled that brain aging follows a distinct yet nonlinear trajectory with critical transition points. The research, conducted by an international team of scientists led by Lilianne R. Mujica-Parodi, PhD, of Stony Brook University, offers
What Are Ketones?
When your body breaks down fats for energy instead of carbs, it produces molecules called ketones. This happens during fasting, intense exercise, or a ketogenic diet. Ketones fuel your brain when glucose is low. Ketosis isn’t just science—it’s a key to a healthier life. How have you taken charge of your health? Let’s get healthy together!

Palmer and other scientists believe problems with #mitochondria are central to #MentalIllness. It's possible the #ketones help the mitochondria by relieving oxidative stress - a harmful buildup of #FreeRadicals - by providing an energy source that circumvents the dysfunctional machinery in the mitochondria.
