_The Evening Post_, 13 September 1924:
“WHEN I AM READY”
POLICE OFFICER ASSAULTED
BY A WOMAN
…
AUCKLAND, 12th September.
In the Magistrate’s Court to-day a married woman was fined £3 [ca. $370 today] for assaulting a police sergeant. The officer stated that accused and another woman rode their horses on to a footpath in #Karangahape road to shelter from rain. He told defendant that she would have to move her mount into the roadway, but she regarded him disdainfully, and replied, “When I am ready.” On witness replying that she was breaking a by-law and that he would have to take her name unless she moved off, defendant became heated and said: “You dare to speak to me. you cad.” She reiterated her refusal to move or give her name. Witness then reached for the horse’s bridle, intending to lead it into the road, when defendant dealt him a vicious blow with her riding crop, saying: “How dare you touch a lady’s horse?” She then cantered off to rejoin her companion, who had discreetly withdrawn during the argument.
Defendant was fined £1 [ca. $120] for a breach of the bylaw.
