Rethinking Assessment for Generative AI: Orals and discussions

This post is part of a series on rethinking assessment in light of generative AI. The posts draw on research and resources from K-12 and tertiary to suggest ways that educators can design engaging, compelling assessments which shift the narrative away from GAI and "cheating". In a previous post, I talked about the risks associated with trying to "catch" students, such as the ethical issues with detection software, the mistrust created by heavy-handed academic integrity policies, and the […]

Rethinking Assessment for Generative AI: Beyond the Essay

The posts draw on research and resources from K-12 and tertiary to suggest ways that educators can design engaging, compelling assessments which shift the narrative away from GAI and "cheating". Click here for the previous post on oral assessments. There are plenty of good reasons to use the essay as a formal piece of assessment. Building 3D worlds helps students bring literature and history to life. Instead of only reading, they can explore virtual scenes, build settings, and recreate events. This hands-on digital learning boosts creativity, teamwork, and understanding. A great way to connect lessons with today’s tech-focused world.

I think my #OhioTesolConference presentation went well today. About 60 or 70 attendees.

Some had trouble with the spreadsheet and script, but they can now at least create multilingual #Google Forms by hand. I also demo'ed 3 languages together in questions and using sections & jump logic for several languages in one Form.

No time to talk about collating data spread b/t several columns or files.

Tomorrow: re-leveling and enhancing readings.

Putting the finishing touches on my #OhioTesolConference presentations for tomorrow and Friday. Tomorrow is family engagement with #MultiLingual #GoogleForms during the B time slot.

Friday is re-leveling texts with #AI / #LLMs, but it went more to #VibeCoding to enhance texts. Sort of the reverse of re-leveling.

Re-leveling is lowering the complexity of the text.

Enhancing is adding supports so students can access the original text.
