I've put a few bars of the lead for Final Countdown on soundcloud, with the Roland jx8p factory preset 28, the jx10 factory preset, and my own patch using jx10 tone 72 plus added synth tone. All with HD Reverb. Also recorded the last one dry. Sequence was recorded on a Roland MSQ sequencer and looped

What do y'all think, pretty close?

Roland JX-8P / Super JX10 patches

Roland Super JX 10 experimentation with patches to play lead of Europe's final countdown (and might add other songs / sound designs to this playlist) First is the Roland JX8P factory patch #28 (Stab

@cou @iotar @synths and finally, LFO and envelope changes. Main change is env1 key to off. Env1 sustain is on the long side, probably not needed once the JX is plugged into a Hall Reverb (another key component for the sound). Here, a Zoom Multistomp MS-70CDR with HD Reverb.

@cou @StefanoGaivota @iotar @synths a lot more changes on vcf/vca

These are changes I would have made myself, open the filter, turn off dynamic, increase Vca vol and reduce Vca dyna (or even turn off). Jx10 preset is really close to the actual patch for the Final Countdown.

Some interesting discovery at lunch time. The stab brass tone (72, preset non volatile) on the JX10 is not used in the Stab Brass 8VA patch preset (C6) as I mentioned. So I decided to compare tone 72 from the #superjx #JX10 to preset 28 on the #Roland #jx8p. IMHO 72 sounds like 28 tweaked to make it sound more like the Final Countdown lead... jx 10 came out a year later, a possibility. #synth #programming #midi #analog

Starting with the DCOs, very similar:

I loaded the Factory preset JX8P tones into the JX 10 and sound 28 STAB BRASS (loads as D4 in the JX10) doesn't sound anything like C6 Stab Brass, especially due to layering which doesn't exist on the jx8p.

Here are the settings for the JX8P sound, before the tweaks, which I'll get to maybe on Tuesday,

@cou @StefanoGaivota @iotar and according to the JX10 manual (and checking on my synth), it is based on tones 74 and 75, GOWESTBAS 2 and GOWESTBAS 1. Sounds counterintuitive. I'll double check the JX8P preset to see what it is based on.

Synths can also look very similar and be completely different. The four synths all work on drastically different principles*—we have subtractive, additive, and FM synthesis, and also sampling. They have as different as a tuba and a violin.

But that’s one of the coolest things about synths and other #ElectronicInstruments: their form factor is arbitrary relative to the sounds they make.

Storage of patches on real synths is always a problem. Not enough space. Many Roland synths (and drum machines like the TR-707 and TR-909) in the 80s used the Roland M-64C cartridge. Both my Roland Alpha Juno 2 and my Roland Super JX-10 also use this cartridge. It is cool, but they go for $100 each. Enter the synthsquare M-4096C. Yes, it is like 64 Roland M64 cartridges. No sysex to mess with, 4096 presets!
