McBride's lawyer, Eddie Lloyd:
"I think that what people do miss about David McBride - because we do focus on, you know, that he was exposing the knowledge that the leadership had of the war crimes going on below them - but I think what really really irritated the ADF and the government was that David McBride was complaining about the war in its entirety, about the propaganda of the war, about the trillions of dollars wasted of the war, about the many many lives lost in the war.
He was really upset about that and that was like one of his main complaints is look at all this money that we're wasting on here and these lives in this wasted war.
I think the Australian people need to know about this. We know now that we went to that war on a lie and the only reason the war continued was because our forces remained there and US forces and coalition forces remained there.
And McBride who you know wanted to be a soldier since he was 5 years old finally goes does his two has his two great loves being a lawyer and being a soldier turns up to this war and it's just rubbish. It's not what he thought it was. It wasn't him being a proud person fighting to defend his country at all. That's not what the war was when he went there. And he was so disappointed and he felt that we had a right to know what was actually going on.
And I don't think you'd find one Australian out there who would disagree with that. That, you know, we should know what we're fighting and who we're fighting for and what we're fighting for. And that's what David McBride's major concern was. in addition to the unruly conduct of soldiers and the covering up of Majors above him."
