Have you ever heard of the Zao Onsen Snow Monsters (Juhyo)? 🏔️
Here is my gouache painting, which was inspired by this natural phenomenon.
These trees become incredible, sculptural figures of ice and snow on the Zao mountain range. It's truly spectacular!
Sadly, the climate crisis is threatening this wonder. Milder winters and changing wind patterns mean the perfect conditions are becoming rarer, and the insect damage (accelerated by higher temps) is reducing the number of stable trees.
We need to protect these delicate formations!
