The Civil Wars, Barton Hollow, 2011 on Sensibility Music

Debut album from John Paul White and Joy Williams, which originally came out in 2011. It's a fantastic debut - I expected to hear so much more great music from them together but unfortunately they only put out one more album (2013's self-titled The Civil Wars) before going their own ways. The title track "Barton Hollow" got a ton of play but really there are a lot of great songs on the record, growing out of the two songwriters' different approaches. (I actually wrote about them here after […]

#JohnPaulWhite (he of The Civil Wars) is like a velvet thundercloud—moody, poetic, and slightly amused by it all. We talked about Beulah, writing from the edges, and why he’ll never write a “happy record.”

“I don’t write autobiographically,” he says. “That bores me.”

We also dig into the death of genre, what’s wrong with mainstream country, and why making a great song should always beat chasing a market trend.

Remembering John Prine!

“Sam Stone's welcome home
Didn't last too long.
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And Sammy took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.”

Shovels & Rope, Busted Jukebox Volume 3, 2021 on Dualtone

The third in a series of cover albums by Shovels & Rope, this one focuses on kids songs or songs in lullaby style, thus the “Juicebox” joke in the cover. But these are great versions with contemporary artists, including Sharon Van Etten, John Paul White (formerly of The Civil Wars), Felice Brothers, Deertick, M. Ward, The Secret Sisters, and the War and Treaty.
