THE SMITHS
Louder Than Bombs
2011 Europe 2xLP reissue

When you’re in the mood for a sad, mopey bastard with his shirt open…
there can only be one choice.

Louder Than Bombs was the second Smiths album I ever heard, and the first of theirs that I bought with my own money.

After stealing my older sister’s boyfriend’s cassette copy of The Queen Is Dead (and having my mind blown), I then set out to find as many Smiths albums I could find.
My local Good Vibrations had the CD version of this, and Strangeways, Meat Is Murder, and the self-titled soon found their way into my collection.

Johnny Marr remains one of my all-time guitar heroes. And even though Morrissey grew up to be one of the douchiest twats of all time, my love for this band will never waiver.

One of the best compilations of a band’s work, PERIOD.

A belated birthday gift arrived today from my wife @suzystarlite. Yes, I still have a hard on for guitars. And delightfully, so does Johnny Marr.

The Smiths, Hatful of Hollow, 1984 on Rough Trade

Another (like The World Won’t Listen) compilation album from The Smiths, including some BBC sessions plus other singles and B-sides. Came out in 1984 in the UK but was not released until 1993 in the US (instead Sire released Louder than Bombs for the US market).

This LP includes “How Soon is Now?” as the b-side to “William, It Was Really Nothing” – the track was also on US editions of Meat is Murder. Also includes “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” which was also on the William single b-side.

My copy, via Crossroads Records in Portland OR, is a 2011 reissue by Rhino on Sire labels, pressed at Rainbo.

“I was staying in a freezing cold attic in a women’s boarding house in #TufnellPark, #NorthLondon, and had probably written a few of the songs before I met them.

Every guitar player I’ve had since #JamesHoneymanScott has been influenced by him, for example #JohnnyMarr. …Jimmy died aged 25, only guitar players remember him and yet he was the sound of #ThePretenders.” — #ChrissieHynde
