Bill Monroe, Bill Monroe & Friends, 1983 on MCA Records
Bill Monroe sometimes gets called the “Father of Bluegrass” – no doubt he’s a pretty foundational figure and his Blue Grass Boys may be the source of the genre’s name.
This is a great collection of later Bill Monroe (he passed in 1996) doing duets with performers who admire him and his legacy. The guesting “friends” here include:
Each song is preceded by a little spoken word intro.
My copy is a Gloversville US pressing with Masterfonics mastering from 1983 – via Vinyl Destination in Lowell MA.

Dillard Hartford Dillard - Glitter Grass From the Nashwood Hollyville Strings (Flying Fish, 1977)
Uneven record carried by the whimsical "Two Hits and The Joint Turned Brown" and the uplifting "Get No Better". Frankly, only recommended for fellow John Hartford stans.

“Ultimately, the sound you get out of any instrument is yourself. The instrument is only a small percentage of it all. The rest is how you touch it, what your left hand does, what your right hand does, what you hear in your head, and the heart and soul that you put into your performance. Those things allow you to find your sound on any instrument you pick up.” - Dave Holland
Check out the second half of our conversation with the legendary Dave Holland. The bassist will be performing with his New Quartet - with Kris Davis, Jaleel Shaw, and Nasheet Waits- at SMOKE Jazz Club from September 4th to September 8th.

We continue our conversation (check out part one here) with NEA Jazz Master Dave Holland by digging into his solo works, bluegrass music, music from around the world, and more. PG: Since musical relationships are very important to you, it would be interesting to know more about your solo bass work on both Emerald Tears
Vassar Clements, John Hartford, Dave Holland (Rounder, 1985)
Holland reunites with Hartford, who first recruited the jazz bassist to play grass on Morning Bugle, and Vassar, from the similarly loose 1975 jam session w/ Norman Blake & co. I was stoked to discover this in the wild without knowing it existed. Till something better comes along... https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFpCUftR8sQfEjX80anQli8psEWtxOdCY&si=K9m7CPGBIhTv-VNK
