The Modern Jazz Orchestra by The Modern Jazz Orchestra, released in 1960 on Criteria
An incredible record from a very unlikely source – the Miami scene of the early 60s, home to some vastly under-recognized players! The genius here is arranger Don Vincent – who put together this beautiful batch of larger group tunes with a flair that easily rivals the best LA work of the late 50s, and which has the depth, hues, and breakout solo moments of the best work of west coast talents like Johnny Mandel or Leith Stevens, especially on their soundtrack albums. In fact, there's a richly soundtrack-like quality here – one that uses the slightly longer tracks as a showcase for particularly expressive moments by the soloists – who include pianist Kenny Drew, making an unusual appearance here, as well as some lesser-known but equally great talents... - Dusty Groove
