I precedenti

A Pollock sold at auction for $181 million, setting a record.

AGI - A Jackson Pollock painting was sold for a record $181.2 million during an auction held yesterday by Christie’s in New York, driving a day of exceptional sales. “Number 7A, 1948,” a large canvas over three meters long characterized by black paint drippings with touches of red, was sold for $181.2 million, including commissions. According to ARTnews, the sale makes the work the fourth most expensive ever sold at auction.

Pollock’s previous auction record was $61.2 million, set in 2021. Other works by him have been sold privately for up to $200 million. “It is with this work that Pollock definitively frees himself from the constraints of conventional easel painting and realizes one of the first truly abstract paintings in the history of art,” Christie’s stated in a release. “Danaide,” a bronze head sculpted around 1913 by the Romanian-born artist Constantin Brancusi, was sold for $107.6 million, surpassing the previous record of $71.2 million set in 2018. “No. 15 (Two Greens and Red Stripe)” by the American painter Mark Rothko was sold for $98.4 million, while “Portrait of Madame K.” by the Catalan artist Joan Miro’ was purchased for $53.5 million.

Previous Records
The sales exceeded previous auction records for Rothko ($86.9 million) and Miro’ ($37 million), both set in 2012. The auction yesterday follows a series of records set by Sotheby’s in November of last year. “Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer” by the Austrian master Gustav Klimt, created between 1914 and 1916, had been sold for $236.4 million, becoming the second most expensive painting ever sold at auction. “The Dream (The Bed)” (1940), a self-portrait by the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, had been sold for $54.7 million, establishing the record for a painting made by a woman. The most expensive painting ever sold at auction remains “Salvator Mundi,” attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, purchased for $450 million in 2017.

The Red Disk – Joan Miró

The Red Disk by Joan Miró (1960, Oil on Canvas, 45.7 × 54.9 cm, New Orleans Museum of Art).

From here:

Set against a dark blue, almost black surface, a white splotch of paint has been hurled out impulsively, and loses itself in innumerable spots and spatters, a cosmic gesture thrust against the empty void of nothingness – almost a metaphor of the artist’s creative activity. Some spots of colour flare up among this galaxy of creativity, of which the largest and most irregular is the red one which gave the painting its title. Minute symbols are scattered around the edges of the entire constellation – stars of hair and little hooks which give this action painting a new poetic dimension and connect it unmistakably with Miro’s world of symbols.
