@sumisu3 @davidonformosa I visited #Jiufen twice and had a great experience at the smaller cafés above the gold ore museum. Both times I was surprised there were no crowds and we easily got seats on the balcony.

We took the bus out to Jiufen this afternoon (about 1 hour from Beimen Station). Jiufen is a small mountain mining town overlooking the northern coast, and is a tourist Mecca for Jiufen Old Street.

Old Street is really a rambling network of tiny laneways winding through the hillside town. Much of it is covered and it is entirely lined by tiny cafes, food stalls, restaurants, and shops. The promotional materials tends to paint it as having an ancient feel (the pictures make it look like Spirited Away), but it turns out most of it isn’t like that. The main tea house is as special as claimed, and there are some cool temples, but otherwise it’s old, but not ancient. It was still fun to explore, even if not exactly what I’d been hoping for.

Unfortunately, I badly sprained my ankle stumbling down stairs , which put a dampener on what was otherwise a good day.

@QingmingRiverBot Just to grab a brief moment of our worlds overlapping - the instrument shown in this photo from famous Taiwanese photographer Deng Nan-guang may also be what would usually be called a 中阮 / zhongruan in Taiwan, although it only has two strings instead of the usual four.

The photo appears to have originally been titled 九份盲女 - “Jiufen blind girl”, and is variously dated between about 1957 and some time in the Sixties.
