The main part of our tour while our ship was docked at Keelung, Taiwan in 2008 was to visit Jiufen, a former gold mining village high in the hills, now a bustling tourist draw thanks to its tight alleys, steep steps, shops, and abundance of tea houses. It is also claimed to be a source of inspiration for the animated classic, Spirited Away.
It absolutely poured down while we were here, but the tight spaces and gloom lit up by shop fronts and signs was still utterly enchanting, if you don't mind a bit of claustrophobia. We walked a lot, we got drenched, we had tea in a tea house, too, and it was all wonderful. We enjoyed the experience so much that we returned here ten years later to do the very same trip.
