Sarah Vaughan, Duke Ellington: Song Book One, 1980 on Pablo Today
First of two records of Sarah Vaughan doing Duke Ellington songs recorded in 1979 and released in 1980 (there is a Song Book Two, also released in 1980). Produced by Norman Granz, and engineered by Val Valentin and Bob Simpson.
Supporting artists include Waymon Reed (trumpet), J. J. Johnson (trombone), Frank Foster (tenor sax), Frank Wess (flute, tenor sax), Zoot Sims (tenor sax), Jimmy Rowles & Mike Wofford (piano), Joe Pass & Bucky Pizzarelli (guitar), Andy Simpkins (bass), and Grady Tate (drums), with Billy Byers arranging and conducting.
Pablo Today was a sub-label that started in 1979 and focused on ânon-mainstream jazzâ â not sure what that means but Iâve had great luck picking up Pablo records in general.
My copy, via Beatnick Records in MontrĂ©al QuĂ©bec, is an original 1980 US pressing. with âManufactured by Pablo Recordsâ rim text.

(Good follow-up since Hall is one of Lageâs inspirations.)
This re-master/re-press from last year is a gem: great playing by Webster, Jim Hall (guitar), Jimmy Rowles (piano), Frank Butler (drums), and Red Mitchell (bass); great recording and mastering (hard to believe it's from 1960); and a nice selection of standards.
Alway fun to listen to Webster fit his growling tone around sweet melodies.
Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster
1959 set, but might has well have been recorded yesterday, bringing together two great sax players, Mulligan on baritone and Webster on tenor.
They're joined by Jimmy Rowles (piano), Mel Lewis (drums), and Leroy Vinnegar (bass).
Swinging, "cool" jazz; good stuff, and another example of these âx meets y" series, playing styles against each other, which often works.
