The Valles Caldera is a 13.7-mile wide caldera, the third largest “supervolcano” in the U.S.

A supervolcano is capable of producing eruptions thousands of times larger than a normal volcano. The last time the Valles Caldera erupted it emitted 150 cubic miles of lava, propelling ash as far as Iowa. That was 1.2 million years ago.

Walatowa, Jemez | Red Rock Trails provides a 1.5 mile self-guided hike through the Walatowa slot canyon. Group tours are available (book in advance). Hiking Permits are required and can be purchased at the Walatowa Visitor Center.
