Today’s my birthday, and I couldn’t have planned a better way to spend it.
I got a last-minute call two nights ago to sub for a show in Vermont, and now I’m spending my birthday doing what I love — playing piano with students, performing with a trio and a big band. Truly grateful for the music, the opportunity, and the chance to share this moment with the next generation of musicians. What a special way to celebrate.

This morning's #workout #music is from a great jazz trio l- Tyshawn Sorey - drums, arranger; Aaron Diehl - piano; Harish Raghavan - bass. Furious mix of composed and improvised music in the tradition of Cecil Taylor, Don Pullen, Andrew Hill and others. Tyshawn Sorey is one of the drummers on the scene today leading his own groups. Alongside Makaya McCraven, Asher Gadmedze, Quin Kirschner and others these drummers are giving us a new golden age of jazz.
