1984 is a 1965 album by Yusef Lateef

1984 Review by Thom Jurek

Yusef Lateef's experimentalism hit the stratosphere in 1965 with the issue of 1984. With bassist Reggie Workman, pianist Mike Nock, and drummer James Black, from the eight-minute title track that opens the album and the two-minute, angular modal ballad "Try Love," 1984 certainly seems to be shaping up into one weird record. The title is an experimental, noodling improv that has Lateef literally moaning as if in mourning throughout -- indecipherably no less... until, at the end, when we've heard the lovely flute on his read of "The Greatest Story Ever Told" and have reentered the complex melodic world of Lateef, that we can understand where we've been harmonically, and it isn't somewhere familiar, though it has some signposts we recognize. In all, a complex yet very emotionally and musically rewarding effort by a master.

Live at Pep's is a 1964 album by the American Jazz tenor saxophonist and flautist Yusef Lateef. Other participating musicians in this album were bassist Ernie Farrow, pianist Mike Nock, drummer James Black and trumpeter Richard Williams. This live album was recorded at Pep's Lounge in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Ron Wynn stated in a review for AllMusic: "This mid-'60s concert was one of Lateef's finest, as it perfectly displayed his multiple influences and interests." He continued: "Lateef played meaty tenor sax solos and entrancing flute and bamboo flute offerings, and also had impressive stints on oboe, shenai, and argol. This was a pivotal date in his career, and those unaware of it will get a treat with this disc." - Wikipedia

Terje Rypdal is an album by Norwegian jazz guitarist Terje Rypdal recorded over two days in August 1971 and released on ECM later that year. The septet features singer Inger Lise Rypdal, saxophonist Jan Garbarek, oboist Ekkehard Fintl, and rhythm section Bobo Stenson, Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen. - Wikipedia

Tyran Grillo wrote on ECM Reviews:

Terje Rypdal’s first ECM effort as frontman is a bewitching look into the Norwegian guitarist’s formative years. With a bevy of talented musicians in tow, he forges a mercurial portrait of late-night melodies and hidden desires. “Keep It Like That – Tight” is stifling and seedy, buffeted by cooling fans and laced with the fumes of an alcoholic haze. It’s a desolate hotel room where more than evening falls..

The Cannonball Adderley Sextet in New York is a live album by jazz saxophonist Cannonball Adderley recorded at the Village Vanguard and released on the Riverside label featuring performances by Adderley with Nat Adderley, Yusef Lateef, Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones and Louis Hayes.

The AllMusic review by Richard S. Ginell :
"This was the recording debut of the Adderley Sextet, with Cannonball waxing eloquently and swingingly on alto, brother Nat charging ahead on cornet, and the versatile Yusef Lateef (who had joined the band only three weeks earlier) adding a bit of an edge on tenor, flute, and unusually for a jazz wind player, oboe on the odd, dirge-like 'Syn-Anthesia'. There is plenty of talk from Cannonball as well... This group would be Zawinul's springboard to prominence in the jazz world.."

Jazz Workshop Revisited is a live album by the jazz saxophonist Cannonball Adderley released on the Riverside label. Alongside Adderley, it features performances by Nat Adderley, Yusef Lateef, Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones and Louis Hayes. It was recorded at the Jazz Workshop in San Francisco on September 22 & 23, 1962.

In his review in the May 9, 1963, issue of DownBeat magazine, the jazz critic Pete Welding wrote: "Spurred on by an appreciative audience present during the recording, the Adderley group has produced a collection that is both stimulating and accessible. There is plenty of good, strong blowing, and to this is added the interest of artful, well-constructed arrangements that enhance the tunes and strengthen the solos."

Jazz at Cal-Tech is an album by saxophonist Bud Shank recorded in January 1956 for the Pacific Jazz label.

AllMusic's review by Jason Ankeney states: "The near-telepathic interplay that distinguishes all of Bud Shank's collaborations with reedist Bob Cooper reaches a dazzling peak with the live Jazz at Cal-Tech. A deceptively freewheeling set... it boasts a simmering intensity often missing from Shank and Cooper's subsequent studio sessions, channeling the energy of the audience to add a new edge to their creative give and take". - Wikipedia
