Diahann Carroll had played Clara in Goldwyn’s Porgy but, at Goldwyn’s behest, her singing was dubbed by soprano Loulie Jean Norman, which must have been a real insult to a singer of Carroll’s caliber. As Previn scholar Frédéric Döhl has noted, Goldwyn’s reverence for the material, both asserted from within and imposed from without, led him to fill the soundtrack with classical singers in order, as Döhl puts it, to “orient the aesthetic emphasis of the sound towards opera.” That might be why Carroll and producer Jack Lewis wanted to tilt away from the source toward jazz. I saw Nani Vazana in concert on Friday night at KPAC in Kirkwood, MO. Amazing singer 😄

Most of her songs were in Ladino but she also covered Sting's "Shape of My Heart" and did a jazz number.

She is touring the US and Canada for the next couple of months.

Lou Rawls gives a riveting performance on Live!, covering standards from Basie/Rushing's tambourine-jumpin' "Goin' to Chicago" to T-Bone Walker's foot-stompin' "Stormy Monday," and whole lot in between. Each selection is as inviting as the next, featuring Tommy Short on piano solos on some. On finger-snappin' numbers like "In the Evening When the Sun Goes Down" and "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water," the crooning baritone wails his way through the lyric. The only single to chart from this live set was the moderately paced number "The Shadow of Your Smile," the theme from the movie The Sandpiper. But Rawls loses no steam; he romances the lyric with vehemence...For soul-stirrin' blues and swingin' jazz numbers, this is an excellent pick.

La chanteuse Charlotte Désilets dévoile son nouveau single “Réverbère”, premier extrait de son EP à venir, Forteresse.
