Archivists such as #JasonScott of #InternetArchive have stepped up to say that files hosted on Hobbes are safe and already mirrored elsewhere. "Nobody should worry about Hobbes, I've got Hobbes handled," wrote Scott on Mastodon. OS/2 World.com also published a statement about making a mirror. https://www.theregister.com/2024/01/10/hobbes_os2_archive_shut_down/

So Jason Scott dropped this earlier today:

136,000 books from the 18th Century.

ONE HUNDRED THIRTY SIX THOUSAND OF THEM.

That would be a point of pride in any library. Making it readable from the Internet, browsable, and downloadable? A pipe dream.

Anyway, here they are.

And I’ve gone to have a look at them; me being me, the first thing I did was to punch the word cypher into the “text content” search engine, and got 7,296 results with apparently a substantial chunk (majority?) relating to Mary, Queen of Scots.

I shall enjoy picking through this.
