BRZRKR, vol 1-3 (2021-2023)

BRZRKR is a comic book series created and written by Keanu Reeves and Matt Kindt, and illustrated by Ron Garney. The comic follows an immortal half-human, half-God warrior, known as B. Cursed and compelled to violence, he has fought and killed his way through the ages, but now works for the U.S. Government completing missions too violent and dangerous for anyone else.

Yeah, this wasn't really my thing. Visually good, story not so interesting tbh. I've never been much for the super hero (or super villain, in this case?) genre since teenager times.

Avoimet suhteet (2024)

Millainen on suhde, jossa on enemmÀn kuin kaksi osapuolta? MitÀ suhteen avaaminen edellyttÀÀ? Avoimet suhteet nÀyttÀÀ, ettei yhteen kumppaniin sitoutuminen ole ainoa tie onnellisiin ihmissuhteisiin.

Toinen lukemani kirja polyamoriaan ja avoimiin suhteisiin liittyen. "The Ethical Slut" on jonkinlainen raamattu nÀissÀ piireissÀ, mutta tykkÀsin tÀstÀ Mirja HÀmÀlÀisen kirjasta paljon enemmÀn. Jollain tavalla enemmÀn pohdintaa, kuin selkeitÀ ratkaisuja. TykkÀÀn, kun asioita pohditaan, eikÀ tuoda valmiina paketteina. Jokainen meistÀ on erilainen. Jokainen suhde on erilainen.

Femokratia (2024)

Jessi Jokelaisen esikoisalbumi kÀsittelee suomalaisen politiikan historiaa, nykyhetkeÀ ja tulevaisuutta erityisesti politiikan naisten nÀkökulmasta. MiltÀ nÀyttÀÀ yhteiskunnallisesti vaikutusvaltainen naiseus valtiossa, jossa naisten yleinen ja yhtÀlÀinen ÀÀnioikeus otettiin kÀyttöön ernsimmÀisenÀ maailmassa? Millaisiin lasikattoihin nykynaiset kolauttavat pÀÀnsÀ?

Erinomainen teos, iso suositus.

Tongues, vol. 1 (2025)

Set in a version of modern Central Asia, Tongues is a retelling of the Greek myth of Prometheus. It follows the captive god’s friendship with the eagle who carries out his daily sentence of torture and chronicles his pursuit of revenge on the god that has imprisoned him.

I have to say, in the beginning when reading this, it was really hard to figure out what was going on. As things went on however, the book becomes extremely captivating. Totally weird, with a fantastic twist in mixing up modern times and mythology. Can't wait for the next volume!

Kadonneen jÀrjen metsÀstys (2024)

Anna Kontulan Kadonneen jÀrjen metsÀstys esittÀÀ, ettÀ terapiapuhe on matkannut kauas yli rajojensa. Julkisuus on kiinnostunut tunteista ja mielen hyvinvoinnista. Samalla terapian kieli on hiipinyt puhetavaksi yhteyksiin, jotka aikaisemmin on mielletty toisin.

Yksi parhaista lukemistani kirjoista viimeaikoina, todella mielenkiintoisella tavalla kirjoitettuja esseitÀ mielenkiintoisista yhteiskunnallisista aiheista.

JÀtetyö on yksi Accran suurista työllistÀjistÀ. LÀheisessÀ Teman satamassa puretaan konteista hylÀttyjen Àlylaitteiden lisÀksi kÀytettyjÀ vaatteitamme. Huomattava osa vaatteista ei pÀÀdy ghanalaisten ylle vaan kulkeutuu paikallisille rannoille, kaatopaikoille ja joutomaille.

TÀtÀ Annu KekÀlÀisen kirjaa lainatessa olin valmistautunut kynsiÀ purevaan lukukokemukseen. Tauotonta tykitystÀ siitÀ miten Eurooppalaisina paskannamme koko maailman kulutuksemme kautta. Vaikka tÀmÀ onkin totta, olin yllÀttynyt kirjan monipuolisesta otteesta. JÀtepihojen kierrÀttÀjien silmistÀ katsottuna asiat eivÀt ole enÀÀ niin yksinkertaisia, ja vaikka jÀteongelma on tosi, muualta maailmasta kierrÀtyspihoille matkaavilla laitteilla on merkitys niin ihmisten elannon kannalta, mutta myös laitteiden aktiivisessa loppukÀytössÀ paikoissa, joissa kyseisiÀ laitteita ei olisi mahdollista uutena saada isolle osalle kansalaisista, eli ns digikuilun kaventaminen. TÀmÀ tarve ei oikeuta paikallisille aiheutettuja ongelmia, mutta on aina hyvÀ muistaa asioilla olevan monia puolia.

Do androids dream of electric sheep? (1968)

It was January 2021, and Rick Deckard had a license to kill. Somewhere among the hordes of humans out there, lurked several rogue androids. Deckard's assignment--find them and then..."retire" them. Trouble was, the androids all looked exactly like humans, and they didn't want to be found!

OK, you're going to have to forgive me for what I'm going to say next.. I didn't actually know (or remember!) Blade Runner had an inspiration from a book 🙈 I'm going to forever crawl into the uncultured hall of shame hole for this, I know. But, maybe finally reading this book fixes a little bit of that, right? Right?

The resemblence is clear of course, and as I was reading the book my mind was going "wait what, they just made the movie out of the book!". But of course it's also not a direct adaptation.

Really great book in any case, happy that I finally got around to reading this classic.

Radicalized (2019)

Radicalized is a collection of novellas written by Canadian-British-American author Cory Doctorow. Radicalized explores such issues as digital rights management, police brutality, radicalization in internet communities, and doomsday preppers.

This was a great collection of stories, all of them really interesting to read through. I especially loved "Unauthorized Bread" which accurately depicts the control corporations aim to push on us, control that is willingly given away by our profit hungry capitalist governments.

"Model Minority" is an ugly story of justice and policy brutality. Not even from the future. Except for the flying super hero guy.

"Radicalized" deals with the possibilities for radicalization in the dark web for those who get denied justice in our corporate driven society.

"Masque of the Red Death" is the weird one in the bunch. Maybe harder to identify with as the whole concept of "doomsday preppers" is such an American concept. Though, looking at the world developing, maybe we should start some of that in Europe too.

Oh, and Cory is the first author whose book I post about that I know is on the Fediverse! Follow recommendation to @[email protected]

The Long Earth (2012)

1916: the Western Front. Private Percy Blakeney wakes up. He is lying on fresh spring grass. He can hear birdsong and the wind in the leaves in the trees. Where have the mud, blood and blasted landscape of No Man's Land gone?

The idea for this book series is really cool. Although co-authored by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter, the book didn't feel very much Pratchett, which I admit was the reason for buying it. I'm kind of unsure if I'll take the time to read the rest of the series through. I feel this book was an ok read, but apart from a cool idea, there wasn't a huge "must continue reading" spark.
