Jarrah forest a living system that includes everything above and below ground. The soil. The roots. The insects. The small mammals, reptiles, and birds. The fungi and microbial life that bind the forest together.

Carrying country - the unseen emotional labour of environmental defence - Overland literary journal

Daniel Garlett is a Noongar cultural educator and community advocate who has spent decades opposing logging, mining, and large-scale land clearing in Western Australia’s forests and catchments. He lives here because he says he cannot live anywhere else. The quiet, the canopy, and the smell of damp earth after rain are not amenities. They are conditions of life.

Well, this week has so far involved a seizure from Jarrah (he missed a dose of his medication, which doesn't bode well for reducing it over the next month, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it), a night of digestive issues for me, and a call from Dad late this afternoon, who thankfully didn't need the hospital this time (probably just dehydrated and low blood sugar; I went over and made him a cuppa and a sandwich).

It's Tuesday. Wtf. I'm putting in an order for less drama for the rest of the week please.

However! Good things are happening all the same:

+ Kid4 has been playing Diablo 2 and loving it and keeps asking me stuff and last night we had a chat about some things (waypoints and identifying items) and he said, 'It's so great to be finally playing a game that I can talk to you about!' (because I play few games, but Diablo 2 is one of my very faves)

+ we have a hot day forecast tomorrow but after that, hopefully it'll be into cooler weather

+ the kitchen stayed clean until the weekend! I say 'stayed clean' – I mean, I kept it clean. Obviously it's a bit messy now given the last couple of days but I feel like it's not overwhelming. Also, the fam is helping with this – yay for a virtuous circle

+ fit in a good trumpet practice before Dad called. I missed so many days last week and I really noticed the difference in my lesson

+ I ordered a record for my birthday soon and it arrived and I'm so delighted 🥰

$55 million has bought Alcoa +3200 hectares of jarah forest to strip mine. And the corporate captured Cook government looking at allowing that strip mining by Alcoa to continue to destroy jarrah forest for at least the next 20 years.

(And how much of that $55 million would Alcoa have had to spend anyway?)

It's hot enough in Perth today to rub beeswax onto a sanded salvaged jarah desktop that is sitting in the sun and have it melt.
Tiny bubbles come up as it soaks into fissure in the timber.

The sheen below is melted wax - this will need to be wiped off at some stage as it will go translucent yellowish when it cools.

The final effect will not be at all glass-like.

In more unwelcome excitement, yesterday ended with Jarrah having a seizure at midnight. Luckily it was just the one, although of course every time he moved for the next several hours, I'd spring awake in preparation for another. My gut is tender and cranky about all this sleep disruption (and possibly the garlic I keep trying to insist I can eat)

Anyway, I've talked to the vet nurse this morning and booked Jarrah in for an appointment next week – with the view to going in earlier if necessary if we get more episodes. The nurse was reassuring and understanding and agreed that a breakthrough seizure on its own is manageable.

Deep, long breaths, bland food and watering the garden are in my future.

Thankfully we've a mostly quiet day planned here, with my only obligations to feed folk, pick up Kid2 from work and meet the sister for coffee (another thing to be thankful for: she's staying with our dad so I know he's safe for the next few days and I don't have to be on call if there are any more medical emergencies while she's there!)

Soil moisture and temperature drive emergence delays associated with fire seasonality in eucalypt forests

Abstract. Many ecosystems are well adapted to fire, although the impacts of fire seasonality and its effect on post-fire recruitment are less well understood. L
