Still in Kyoto on day 13 of my first Japan trip in 2006, I visited Fushimi Inari Taisha in the morning. Afterwards, I continued down to Nara for a few hours, then returned to Kyoto for an evening stroll around Gion.

Day 12 of my first Japan trip in 2006 was spent in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto. I went to Kiyomizu-dera at 6:30 AM, then explored more temples including Kodaiji and Nanzenji, with cherry blossoms still going strong.

After a last short morning stroll around Nagoya Castle in the morning of day 11 of my first Japan trip in 2006, it was a short 45' Shinkansen ride to Kyoto. Upon arrival, I left my bags at the hotel and headed out to explore Kyoto Station and Nishiki Market.

On day 8 of my first Japan trip 20 years ago, I took a train from Shinjuku Station to Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture, where I walked around town and explored the magnificent Matsumoto Castle (one of Japan’s "three great castles" alongside those in Himeji and Kumamoto).
