Who?
Brandon Alexander is a photographer and film editor. Really with no social media to speak of and upon receiving these zines, it was interesting to see that his work matches that level of mysteriousness…
What?
" During the state-mandated lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic, Brandon Alexander travelled the United States, capturing images of "an empty America we’ve never seen before.” What followed was a collection of deep landscapes of vacancy and isolation. Span.Studio designed a limited artist's edition of 250 zines, each featuring a different cover and pagination within, to serve as both archive and expression of a wandering journey through one of our country’s darkest times."
Why?
I remember there was a joke going around during the pandemic that there were going to be a bunch of photographers who were going to go around shooting the emptiness of cities with a profound title more or less taking the same pictures. On its premise, this would have seemed to be one of those, but then the sheer originality of the photos make it.
With so much darkness and space carrying a much more nuanced atmosphere, this represents I feel more of the psychological isolation of the time than anything literal that the joke was commenting upon. Brandon's own words at the book's end serve to reflect this:
_" I thought I'd photograph the road during state mandated lockdowns and catch an empty America we've never seen before. I'd represent the times - a contested election, a pandemic, the west devouring itself out of guilt. _
None of those images worked. I went from interstates and major cities to historic highways to backroads to my back yard. But how could I photograph flowers at a time like this?
I can 't say what's accomplished here (and one shouldn't put pen to paper in order to think). I find myself at the conclusion of this work as both subject and object, an offering of sorts."
Details.
Designed by Span Studio, custom software was written in Processing to generate the artwork for the covers, each a wandering path through random points along the way. The covers were then produced on uncoated black paper via digital printing in multiple hits of white ink. Inside, the portfolio was printed on high-gloss paper to maximize the depth of the extremely dark photography.

Jesse's Book Review - Bread in Snow by Mark Cohen
I haven't reviewed or really even sat with a Mark Cohen photo book, which is such a shame. Known for shooting his rural northeastern section of Pennsylvania (Scranton) from the 60s, this is among his last two photo books both released by Super Labo over the last 5 years. "Grim Street" and "True Color" are his most known works hovering around a 1,000 dollars…while "Bread in Snow" here remains available for something more reasonable.
Shot between 1977-1987, all the photos in the book are in color. A bit different since he was primarily known for his black and white images. The time period coincides with the New American Color photography of Eggleston, Shore, etc., yet unlike his contemporaries who shot with the more expensive Kodachrome, Kodacolor, and Ektachrome; Cohen shot with the faster (slightly) yet cheaper Kodak Vericolor II.
Immediately noticeable are the deeper reds made crimson conjuring Rothko or an Ingmar Bergman. I keep coming back to the simplicity of the rich red fence…
…or the woman with just one red glove. Of which he writes:
"it was this fragment -suddenly in the frame- at the bus stop, not composed, but quickly centered, that was the start of the picture. One hand is bare and one is gloved and the fact of the color film in the camera is almost incidental. After developing the film the glove she is wearing is distinctly red-but at the time of the exposure-putting the camera lens so close to the clasped hands - was a much more intense experience-then the trespass into her personal space."
He goes on to say:
"Color added additional voice to pictures.I felt they gained energy, and accidental social, meaning as I walked through the city attracted by almost anything. Any eye contact was a factor."
Quite different from his Tri-X B&W shots that to the point characterized his work it was around this time (1977) he chose to shoot the whole year in color. The last year of the project in 1987, he did switch to Fuji 1600 color film where the difference in grain is noticeable.
Although in color, his style is entirely on display in this book. Wide angle, flash, and close-up while for the most part cropping faces to focus upon details. A bit more austere then the sometimes compared Parr…he fits somewhere comfortably on his own terms between Eggleston and the former. The dying industrial city in Pennsylvania plays and equally large role in defining his style, separating himself.
With that, the photo book can be purchased directly from the publisher here for about 50 USD. A steal considering the price of his other work, as the book here remains firmly within his style… making for a great deal!

ON THE SAME BOAT by Alexander Munoz and Yusuke Nagata
Who?
Yusuke Nagata is a Tokyo based Japanese photographer. He does a lot in the street photography community from darkroom workshops to zines and is a mentor too many. He is the founder of Tokyo SPC and has done a visual interview with us as well. While Alex Munoz is a U.S. photographer based in Tokyo. Over the last year he has really been around the Tokyo street photography scene, running into him a quite a few events. He has a popular Youtube.
What?
For 2 years, Alex Munoz and Yusuke Nagata searched for "boats" in Japan. These boats were filled with smokers in search of rest from the hustle of day to day life in Tokyo. Smokers are a dying breed and this serves as a documentation of these unique people.
Why?
James Joyce once said of his close friend Italo Svevo's novel Zeno's Consciousness: "I didn't know one could be so consumed by the act of smoking." Without knowing anything going in, the theme of "On the Same Boat" makes itself evident bringing forth a similar sentiment. The two photographers alternating pages breaks any would be monotony for a surprisingly dynamic zine.

A collection of over 100 street photography photos from Fukuoka, Japan during 2017-2022. He humbly added to me that it was also a means to do something with his digital work which turned out functional.
Why?
In the photographer's own words:
"The title "Formations" has two meanings in this photo zine. Both the formation of my style of street photography and the formation of subjects within the frame of the photo… I hope you can also appreciate this photo zine as a time capsule for the city and it's people."
