The story goes that Watt had the idea while idly watching a kettle boil on a fire during a walk around the green one Sunday morning. This makes it one of the few scientific discoveries which can be tied not just to a single individual, but also to a specific location, much like Newton's discovery of the theory of gravity.

Now, I've had some of my best ideas while wandering through Glasgow's many parks, but none have yet been quite of this calibre!

Beside the Nelson Monument on Glasgow Green (you can't miss it its the 144 foot tall pointy thing!) is this boulder. It marks the approximate location where, in 1765, James Watt had his revolutionary idea for improving the efficiency of steam engines by using a separate condenser, and in doing so, he helped kick-start the industrial revolution.

It was around this time that Watt had his idea to greatly improve the efficiency of steam engines by adding a separate condenser, so helping to kick start the industrial revolution. The location of this workshop is marked by a plaque on the side of the current building.
