“Ultimately, the sound you get out of any instrument is yourself. The instrument is only a small percentage of it all. The rest is how you touch it, what your left hand does, what your right hand does, what you hear in your head, and the heart and soul that you put into your performance. Those things allow you to find your sound on any instrument you pick up.” - Dave Holland
Check out the second half of our conversation with the legendary Dave Holland. The bassist will be performing with his New Quartet - with Kris Davis, Jaleel Shaw, and Nasheet Waits- at SMOKE Jazz Club from September 4th to September 8th.

The Newport Jazz Festival has survived seven decades primarily due to how forward-looking it has been. The event has generally recognized talent above notoriety. If you present high-quality artistry, people will support it. Many of the greats tied to the Newport legacy made their most important appearances when they were underrecognized or overlooked. “I’ve thought about how many important saxophonists Roy [Haynes] has played with, whether Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Trane, Eric Dolphy, Joe Henderson, or Kenny Garrett. Roy played with everyone. I did a Charlie Parker tribute gig with him at The Jazz Showcase. I’ll never forget it. We were playing mostly Charlie Parker tunes, and I turned around to see a big poster of Bird on the wall behind Roy. And it’s like “Oh man.” Seeing that poster behind him put everything into perspective.”- Jaleel Shaw
Check out our conversation with Shaw on his past performances at Newport Jazz Festival, working with Roy Haynes, his well overdue upcoming Newport leader debut (with Lawrence Fields, Dezron L Douglas, and Joe Dyson), and more.

The Newport Jazz Festival’s history of saxophonists is vast, including heroes like John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Ornette Coleman. What are less discussed are the incredible sidemen at the event over the years. Often, recognition comes only to those who lead their own groups at the Festival. One could argue an exception exists in Paul
