A 250-year-old Jain Trust building collapsed in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer after alleged illegal basement excavation at a neighbouring plot. https://english.mathrubhumi.com/news/india/250-year-old-jain-trust-building-collapses-jaisalmer-illegal-excavation-sonar-fort-islxmare?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #Jain #Rajasthan #Jaisalmer #LatestNews

I already described the city of Jaisalmer in a previous post. Next to the beautiful windows of the Havelis, shown in the previous post, this women was selling her accessories. Those two pictures give you a little insight in the city's dynamics and appearance.
Did you recognize the QR-code? While in Germany some stores do not accept payment by card, in India even street vendors can be paid by online transaction. What a time to be alive.

Forget air conditioners. Jaisalmer's 377-year-old Hawa Prol uses wind, stone and design to stay cool in Rajasthan's scorching summer. https://english.mathrubhumi.com/multimedia/videos/377-year-old-hawa-prol-in-jaisalmer-desert-heat-cooling-design-p0s05qjc?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #Jaisalmer #HawaProl #SonarFort #Rajasthan
As Rajasthan battles intense summer heat, villagers in Jaisalmer are relying on Peelu, a traditional desert fruit believed to prevent dehydration and heat-related illnesses. https://english.mathrubhumi.com/multimedia/videos/peelu-fruit-jaisalmer-villagers-scorching-heat-h0rg69y8?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #Peelu #Jaisalmer #Rajasthan #Heatwave

Once a city of trade, Jaisalmer is still beautifully decorated by artistic rajasthani stonemasory. Especially the Havelis, past homes of the rich merchants of the silk road, reveal a hint of this history. Nowadays, the shining ceilings and details in every part of the facade strongly contrast life on the streets. Women selling cheap jewelery, men offering their rikshah service and children begging for some rupees. Cows know exactly when and where to get feed. Tourist guides who never finish coughing off the dust of the desert roads. Chefs of rooftop restaurants, who never left this city of 50000 residents, travel the world through the backpackers' narratives.
Today the golden city seems to be a tourists' city. And competing with more well known destinations e. g. Jaipur and Jodhpur, its' resource is the Tahr Desert. Flooded by dozens of Desert Camps, what was a trade route once is now monetized differently.
I, myself participating in this process, do not judge this development. Who am I to do so. I am thankful for the experiences I received there.

After #Jaisalmer I went to #Bikaner, a much less visited city… and I kind of understand why. It was my least favorite in Rajasthan. Messy, chaotic, and not that much to see compared to others.

But Bikaner is a good the base to visit the Karni Mata Temple, also known as the “Rat Temple.”

Thousands of rats everywhere. Running around, climbing, walking between your feet. It’s bizarre and definitely not for everyone, but easily the most unique thing I did there.

Took a train from #Jodhpur and ended up at what felt like the edge of India, #Jaisalmer, right next to the #TharDesert. #india

They call it the Golden City, cause the whole place glows with that warm sandstone architecture, especially under the desert light.

Inside the fort there’s a whole micro city, people living, shops, daily life happening within the walls.

The havelis (old merchant houses) are incredibly detailed, and even the cenotaphs on the outskirts have this quiet, striking beauty.

A rare sighting of the elusive caracal in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer has sparked hope among conservationists. With only a handful left in India, experts say this confirms a thriving ecosystem in the desert grasslands. https://english.mathrubhumi.com/multimedia/videos/rare-caracal-spotted-in-rajasthans-jaisalmer-boosts-conservation-hopes-f8uu3etu?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #Caracal #RajasthanWildlife #Jaisalmer #WildlifeConservation
