🚀 Ah, the noble quest to secure the Internet's mailman! 🌍 #BGP is still as safe as letting toddlers handle your bank transactions. But fear not, because #ISPs will definitely implement #RPKI and save the day...right after they solve world peace and cure aging. 😂

Is BGP safe yet? · Cloudflare

On the Internet, network devices exchange routes via a protocol called BGP (Border Gateway Protocol). Unfortunately, issues with BGP have led to malicious actors being able to hijack and misconfigure devices leading to security problems which have the potential to cause widespread problems. BGP security can be greatly improved by using technologies such as RPKI to sign Internet routes. This page attempts to track the progress of major Internet players (ISPs, transit operators, and content providers) in their progress to adopt RPKI and other technologies.

In 2025, we launched the original #LibreQoS #Bufferbloat #Speedtest to give users and #ISPs a clearer way to measure #latency under load, not just raw #bandwidth.

Now, we are releasing Bufferbloat Test v2.0: https://libreqos.io/2026/03/23/libreqos-bufferbloat-test-v2/

We are dedicating this release to @mtaht

@Slash909uk @phlash Oh! I had forgotten I had these online. These are from when we built Genie Internet for Cellnet - Originally on the Telex floor (where Wireplay was), and then we had to move it up to the 5th or 6th onto my office floor, where the corporate networks hung out. This was the install record, sadly taken on a 1999 digital camera, sorry! I had a skim, there's nothing in there that would be considered classified these days.

The Celnet Genie service, which we designed as an "ISP in a box", was pretty amazing, really, especially for an essentially free ISP.

Also, it's one of those odd jobs where you end up as both lead applications architect, systems manager, server builder, removal dude, and underfloor cable rat and crimper in the same project. I feel jobs like that in big corporations tend not to exist any more.

@mjdxp I think all #ISPs should be mandated to not only deliver the advertised speed, but to refund customers every month they fail it and pay for any remedies taken in the meantime to circumvent shit…

Haven't posted much recently because fairly busy with end of #AdultESOL term (papers to grade!), the new / next #CyberSecurity class (network security, so deals with actual #tech, not bureaucracy).

Also, we switched #ISPs when we had a new option that was cheaper and about 200x faster. I think we are finally close to speeds we had in #Japan 20 years ago.

ISP #Router interface not great; they want you to use a phone app. Both have fewer features and worse gui than the 10yo one we replaced.
