(For those who haven't read **The Buried Giant** - it involves the loss of long-term memory.)

I really like Ishiguro and how his style adapts to the type of story he's writing (fable, SciFi, period piece, etc.). I think he's a masterful writer!

Je dis #Tanizaki ou bien #Akutagawa par ce qu’ils sont exemplaires d'une technique de narration qui permet d’entrevoir l’intransigeance d’un héros dépassé par le réel, mais c’est peut-être #Ishiguro même qu’en est le vrai maître : son « Remains of the day » est probablement la meilleure interprétation d’un homme pris au piège de ses conventions, quelqu’un qui croit avoir une ferme emprise sur la réalité mais n’aura finalement connu que de malentendus et d'incompréhension. 3/3

#vendredilecture d’un #Ishiguro que je ne connaissais pas : « An artist of the floating world » de #KazuoIshiguro (#石黒一雄), paru en anglais en 1986, deuxième et dernier de son œuvre situé au Japon après « A pale view of hills » de 1982. Dans un style qui laisse penser à #Tanizaki (sauf que #Ishiguro n’a jamais rien écrit en japonais) il fait raconter son narrateur très peu fiable de sa vie d’après-guerre de père de famille, et on comprend vite que tout ce monde lui échappe complètement. 1/3

Kazuo Ishiguro makes me think I might be the exception & a bit lacking in IQ.
The Remains of the Day put me off years ago.
Finally this year read Klara & the Sun. It was good, so started on Never Let Me Go. Yawn.
But I must be the stupid one, as he has the Nobel Prize.

Een zeldzaam goed verteld verhaal, schijnbaar eenvoudige structuur, dijk van een spanningsboog die in elk hoofdstuk wordt vergroot, geloofwaardige vertelstem. Gewoonweg jammer dat ik het boek uit heb.
