The very grand Isdalen valley on the day we tried to descend into it. The slopes down into the valley looked too steep and icy to ski with pulkas, and with my friend’s limited ski touring experience we decided to turn back. On the map the terrain looks quite different, but what it never shows is how the snow has accumulated on the slopes or how icy they actually are.

Winter vista shaped by silence and sliced by shadow. I took this photo of Bárrás with a shadow cast from Pältsän on our way back to Goppahytta after our failed attempt to descend into the Isdalen valley. Sometimes turning back gives you the best views. And keeps you alive.
