Unterhalb der Festung liegt vor der Küste von Pylos die schmale Insel Sfaktiria, die den natürlichen Hafen fast vollständig abschirmt. Sie spielte in mehreren historischen Schlachten eine wichtige Rolle, zuletzt 1825 im griechischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg. Im diffusen Licht vor dem nächsten Regenschauer zeichnet sie sich als dunkle Silhouette gegen das offene Ionische Meer ab.

Lande unfreiwillig in Igoumenitsa: wegen stürmischer See wurde die Fähre aus Italien gestern hierher umgeleitet. Deutlich kürzer als die Route nach Patras, aber mit unerwarteten Folgen. Ich studiere die Straßenkarte und fahre gezwungenermaßen eine lange Strecke über Land; der Peloponnes bleibt das Ziel, nur der Weg hat sich deutlich geändert.
