Douglas Murray is a poisonous individual.
So there was value in exposing that on Newsnight.

the paradox of #tolerance, popper's warning, is now biting us in the ass

because for far too long we just let it slide

because it was too annoying to do anything about, it's just easier to make a judgment, and then... nothing

and now the bill comes due

you *have* to be intolerant of #intolerance. real consequences

or it grows

and now *we* are drowning in the inevitable consequences of our inaction, timidity, hesitance

A quotation from Robert Ingersoll

Millions upon millions were sacrificed upon the altars of bigotry. The Catholic burned the Lutheran, the Lutheran burned the Catholic, the Episcopalian tortured the Presbyterian, the Presbyterian tortured the Episcopalian. Every denomination killed all it could of every other; and each Christian felt in duty bound to exterminate every other Christian who denied the smallest fraction of his creed.

A quotation from Orwell

But public opinion, because of the tremendous urge to conformity in gregarious animals, is less tolerant than any system of law. When human beings are governed by “thou shalt not,” the individual can practice a certain amount of eccentricity: when they are supposedly governed by “love” or “reason,” he is under continuous pressure to make him behave and think in exactly the same way as everyone else.

Trump modifications to Meta's moderation rules, 1/8

I remember reading articles about Meta giving in on Trump's so-called free speech demands in January - even before Trump was inaugurated. That said, I never went looking to the source, that is Meta's definition of "hateful conduct". Now, after having done so, it is glaringly obvious that Trump's (and Musk's) intolerant anti-woke agenda is directly reflected in the new rules.

A small group of friends and I had a little discussion today as to whether someone who vocally supports Trump should be welcome in a community primarily focused on solidarity and unionization.

While it’s true that “If everyone agrees with me, my #union is too small”, I think there is a line to be drawn when someone openly promotes a political leader who promotes intolerance. Karl Popper’s Paradox of Intolerance and Yonatan Zunger’s framing of tolerance as a peace treaty both say that intolerance should be a disqualifying trait in a tolerant society. Does support for an intolerant leader make you also intolerant? It certainly creates a threatening atmosphere for people who belong to targeted groups.

Some argue that the community should be a big tent that welcomes all as long as unionization succeeds, despite their support for intolerance. Me? I don’t want a Nazi bar, even if Nazis make great cocktails.

What do you think? Where and how would you draw the line?

@divVerent

i disagree

and in the #USA, after the #CivilRightAct, so did #US #law:

...until #MAGA chipped away at it

😡

there is #tolerance

or there is #intolerance

there is no other choice

period

and the choice is obvious

and there is never, ever the possibility to respect intolerance in any way shape or form whatsoever

and hammering at that until you're left with a sword, then hacking away with that sword, is the only moral approach
